Cork, I am so happy to hear that your daddy is doing better!!! I hope he continues to improve. So glad he will have some good doctors treating him from here on out. He is very lucky to have you with him.

I didn't mention this before because I wanted to make sure your daddy was going to be ok. 7 years ago my mother passed away. She had COPD, and was in the hospital. She was also being treated with Theophylline, Cipro and Prednisone. She had congestive heart failure as well, but she did not make it out of the hospital. She was scheduled for a broncoscopy on the morning that she passed. I had talked to her the night before and she sounded good. I always wondered what really happened. I never got any answers from the hospital, except that they said she went into respitory arrest, so I finally just let it go. Now hearing this about this combination of drugs it makes me wonder if it could have been a cause. I can't do anything about it now, I know. But it does make me wonder.

I hope you get some much needed rest!!!!

Kath,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

If it was NOT for Corks, Drug knowledge, I surely would not have known what to do or IF there was anything to do. The biggest thing I surely have learned in these incidences with "Pop" is that we (Unfortunately) can not just give complete trust to strangers to care for our loved ones. I am probably the most trusting of us girls....i would have believed and done everything the Doctors said to do. It's not that anything was done out of meaness or anything, just over worked under paid Staff that do not have the interest in Our "Pop" that we do. These men and women are Humans, and we all error, but, as Cork and the rest of the Family have showd this group..... there is No room for error when dealing with OUR POP! It surely was Great to have Cork there to Keep these new Dr's abreast on what she believes....No...KNOWS , what has happened here.

I am waiting to hear from them today the Pulminary Dr. came in last evening and discussed the COPD and Lungs, and the directions they will have to go into in the future if he wants to make changes in his life. He seemed to understand the Hardheaded type of species that Pop is and when I asked....."So what if he Plays Hero and doesn't let anyone know how he really is feeling or how things are going, the Dr's will only see what is in front of him at that second"....... His reply....."I will not go on his response alone............I will talk to HER!" and pointed to Mom......It was a cute moment in all of this scary garb. as Cork, and Mom and I burst into laughter at the thought of another Man telling our Oh so strong Brave Pop, that......there are some instances...."Mother knows Best". :)

We all truly Appreciate all of your prayers, they truly work, and the friendships, old and New to come that have created and will continue to keep this "SoWal" family such a "Gotta Have" experience.

KD, my heart is breaking for you sweetie  and there was no way that you could have known what to do.

Theophylline used to be a very common drug for COPD many years ago but as Skunkiy and Audie said, it's been replaced by many better drugs. Even being a pharmacist, it took me a while to catch this and even his current doctors needed educated on it. They kept discounting what I was saying for whatever reason. At first, I thought they didn't want involved in what they thought could be a law suit but after they did the echocardiogram and couldn't find any reason, the cardiologist began to finally listen to what I had to say. He seems TOTALLY unfamiliar with the drug and I can only assume that it's not used much anymore so he doesn't see it much and has no reason to know about it. The only doctor that knew what I was talking about was the internist (a woman of course) :rotfl: (Sorry Skunk ). She immediately ordered a blood level.

I feel really bad because I knew he was taking the Theophylline, Cipro and Prednisone but I ASSUMED that the appropriate tests were being done to monitor his levels. Also, my dad doesn't listen and gets defensive if I question his doctors.

All I can say is that health care professionals are human. If you meet one that says that they never made a mistake....either they haven't been doing it long or they are lying. Every one of us have made mistakes.

I lucked out this time and caught it but I can't be here 24/7 and he's going to have to LISTEN to his doctors AND those that care about him.

KD, I truly hope that this hasn't brought any bad memories. As you said, there's not much anyone can do about it now and I she knows how much you loved her and I know that you know how much we all love you. PM me if you need me.:love:

Cork, I'm glad it's all getting better again. Your dad (and mom and you) have had some roller coaster years lately with his health! He's lucky he has such a loving (and persistant) daughter with a pharmaceutical background!
