After reading this thread, I'm wondering if this VP choice may be partly to divert people's attention away from Iraq and the economy - the bigger issues we need to deal with.

I would have loved to have been taught religion in high-school. I had plenty of Southern Baptist taught to me during my youth, but never anything other than Christianity. Hell, people in my Church even thought that Methodists were sub-par. My Junior year of high school, we did take Economics and Philosophy, which I thought was cool, and don't know why public schools don't offer such.

Speaking about God in public places, I did notice quite a few prayers being said at the DNC Convention in Denver.

What? We all look like Jesus, don't we, and we were made in his image. The Bible and Shroud of Turin tell us so.

King Tut was reportedly born 1341 years before Jesus was born, so I wonder about the accuracy of that statement. :dunno: The Bible wasn't even written until thousands of years after people were walking the Earth. ;-)

Many large public schools do offer electives in religion and philosphy, but in a small school system such as Walton County it is hard to offer such a wide array of electives. We don't even have all of the electives most people consider essential- chorus and French immediately come to mind.

For example, SWHS has band and drama. The band and drama teacher also have to teach other subjects besides band and drama, since those classes are not offered every period. I am hoping that we can find a "multi-tasking" chorus teacher soon too!

I think "world religions" could be incorporated into a history or social studies class, but the very Christian right would probably be upset that their children were exposed to non-Christian religions.

Agree with Jdarg - creationism has no place alongside evolution.

I realize I may be solidly in a minority here - but IMHO -religious views should be taught at home and in church - religions should be taught at school like Ms. Kitty's son's school) - there would be MUCH less fear in this country if there were greater understanding and compassion for those of differing beliefs/religions.

I have no interest in my children being taught creationsim IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL as I do not for a second believe in this fairy tale either - but for those of you who do believe, you can teach this yourself or have your church do it (which is much more appropriate).
Thanks

French? Since when did it get in such high-demand? I always wanted to take it, but I think today, we better start to learn Chinese. We had Latin in the 8th grade, and Spanish in 10th and 11th. I think my brother's class, a few years younger, eventually took French. I just had not thought about French class being essential.

Thinking more about it, I'm not sure when we would have had time to take religion during the course of the school day. Except maybe during one of our 30 minute study halls during our Sr. year.

You got that right, big-time. I think that in my hometown, any high-school religion class would have been limited to main-stream Christianity. Had plenty of that in Sunday school and Church, as well as at home. I would have liked to venture out and explore, learning about all of the worldly religions. I would have also liked to have learned some life classes, too, but I guess all of that stuff, one has to learn about on his or her own.

I hear the complaint about French a lot from families that moved here from bigger cities, where their kids were in enrolled in college prep based public school or private school, then get to SoWal and find the offerings are slim due to the school size.

When I was in high school, many more people took French than Spanish. German was fairly main stream also. Times have changed, and Chinese would be an excellent addition. Will took Latin on line, and it is helping him in his Anatomy/Phys class this year.
