I boiled four hot dogs and opened a can of green beans tonight.

The only reason I boiled them is that our microwave is on the fritz.

Skunky needs to count his blessings. ;-)

I go to food network...and check out recipes....they rate them easy to difficult.....;-)

next to my fave cookbooks, this is my recipe resource!!!

Have Skunky pick up Thai food at Royal Orchid on the way home.

this is the very best idea yet. in fact, I don't know why he doesn't pick up RO once per week for us all. we'll give him ten dollah.

First of all, you did not say healthy....
  • crock pot is your friend, I have cajillions of recipes
  • shake and bake pork chops
  • lasagna
  • tacos
  • quesadillas
  • fancy sandwich night (reuben, club, philly)
  • soup w/grilled cheese
  • stuffed bell peppers
  • crawfish casserole (i have a recipe and it is super easy)
  • alfredo w/ mushrooms

these sounds delish, except: I never liked the crock pot - don't know why. so gave away the wedding gift crock pot years ago... I like doing my stew or soup or whatever on the stove in the dutch oven. if I'm not home to cook, then it ain't going to be cooking. also, lasagna takes me hours - or a whole day, so its night a weeknight deal.

tacos rock!!!
love grilled cheese and tomato soup!

stuffed bell peppers - now, that is an idea! how do you do these?

ibd - you've got all kinds of recipes you need to be sharing. start a thread! what was that crab dip on super fat tues?

punzy - great little thread my little domestic goddess... let me think of some favorite suppas, and I'll give my list.

I'm in the cooking slump too, and have been for the longest time (much longer than usual). I love cooking, when its for funn and when its not expected as a daily thing.

this is my suggestion, from me to you. take a break. neither of you will starve if you don't cook. pick up something, go out, eat a sandwich, make a big ass pot of soup and eat it for days on end.

don't cook anything. seriously. read your cook books, or don't. refresh yourself. and your cooking inspiration will return. eventually.

if you don't want to do it, then don't. you will not enjoy cooking if you gotta do it (like our moms did). you will survive without a hot meal each night.

meanwhile, want me to come cook tomorrow night?

I have the cooking blahs too right now. Probably is the time of year and we need some fresh foods from the market (but that will be a few months from now). We LOVE ready made frozen meals from Trader Joes -- orange chicken, stuffed poblano (?) peppers, frozen pizza. Those are our favorite things but there are many choices. The frozen desserts are very good, too. Trader Joe's has reasonable prices.

They also have other ready-made non-frozen foods.

LOVE the orange chicken. Pair it with the brown organic rice that's ready in 3 minutes, and you've got a great meal!!!

Punzy - What about pork tenderloins. Cook those much? We have several recipes that we rotate. Yummy!

Back in College, Rapunzel gave up going to a sorority formal (probably because we had 3-4 a year! Good grief!) to be our personal chef. She handmade the table cloths, made the table decorations (good old candle dripped wine bottles) and cooked for us (her 3 roommates and our dates) a delicious meal of Cornish Game Hens. I don't remember what the sides were but I do remember the cake she made for dessert. It was delicious! It had lemon, orange and coconut flavors!

That was my first Rapunzel catered meal. What were we like 19 years old? Who knows how to cook Cornish Hens at 19 years old??????????????

That's pretty amazing..which leads me to the question....who taught you how to cook? Mom, Grandma? self-taught?

Please share! I never cook pork. I'm on a steady chicken/beef/chicken/seafood rotation. That's probably part of the problem. I haven't wanted to eat beef since I saw that video Monday morning on CNN, and Shrimper's is closed for the season. It's basically been chicken overkill.

OH! NO! No, not my mother! My mother can make fried chicken, potato salad, and dressing on Thanksgiving. That's it.

When I was about 5 or 6, I went to spend the night with my friend Nerissa. Her mother served this fabulous meal with the most delicious green things. I asked my mother to please cook some "little trees" for me afterward. You know -- green things, shaped like trees, with green soft trunks instead of hard brown ones. Finally, my mom called Nerissa's (they family was from Australia) to see what exotic vegetable I'd been fed -- broccoli. My mother's profound embarrassment led to my realization that I was being gastromonically abused. Apparently, there were foods beyond Campbell's Chicken Noodle, Spaghetti-O's, grilled cheese sandwiches, and English peas!

I began to idolize Nerissa's mother. Her house smelled like gingerbread all winter, and I realized the slice and bake sugar cookies provided in my own home were yet another sign of the marginalization and neglect my mother was perpetrating against me. Nerissa's mom only allowed PBS. Nerissa envied my full access to Eight is Enough, Fantasy Island, Love Boat, and the Incredible Hulk. I asked for a TV in my room for Christmas because the barbarians that were my family refused to watch PBS. Once I had access to PBS, I began a Sunday ritual -- I'd spend the day watching cooking shows.

I learned to cook from Julia Child, Natalie Dupree, and Martha Stewart, from Jacques Pepin, Justin Wilson, and the Frugal Gourmet.
