Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
Had flu shot November 15th! We have a bunch of Nurses come in and give them to all the employees at work for free. When you work in close quarters with 1300 people, you can't take chances!

I emailed Weight Watchers the other day, asked them about special diets for high blood pressure, lowering cholesteral, tryglicerides, etc- this is what they said- which of course makes sense.

Dear Ken,

The Weight Watchers? Food Plan is designed to meet nutritional recommendations for healthy people. If you have medical conditions that include a special diet (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, food allergies, etc.), you are encouraged to take the Weight Watchers food plan to your physician or dietician for review. Adherence to modifications made by your health professional must be your responsibility.

Sincerely,

Hadi

I have a follow up appointment on the 24th and will set up appt with dietician.

On my own I'm already down 6 lbs and holding. My goal is 24 lbs by this time next year. 18 more to go!

 You'll do it DKA. The trick for me was changing habits and routines in terms of eating healthy foods, portion control, calorie counting, and having an exercise plan I stuck to. Once you get it down, you really just have to stick to it with a few exceptions now and then. But I gained 2.5 lbs in the past 2 months because I stopped walking 4 days/week for 30 minutes consistently. So, I'm getting back to it.

I joined Weight Watchers last week to lose a stubborn 10 pounds and that's one of the things they really stress--drinking lots of water. And they're very clear that it has to be "unaltered" water. Diet soda, tea, and coffee are fiine but you have to get the plain water in. And you're dead on about endorphins. I have to push myself to walk the neighborhood in the winter but every time I make myself do it, I'm always glad that I did. Exercise really is a mood lifter. Of course the MP3 player stuck in my ears helps a lot, too. ;-)

how is WW going?

paula - are you using a certain diet plan or just your own?

I'm just about ready. its march and I've eaten my way through winter. I'm also doing pilates and yoga so I haven't gained that much. but I have definitely gained a few when I needed to lose several.

I always do best when I can use a good plan to get my started such as south beach.

any suggested healthy eating plans? I need to write my own - we should all be experts by now. its the doing that I need help with.

I've never done well on diets. When you work with food every day it's very difficult to stay on track.
I do, however, have a favorite recipe for an awesome bean salad. It's very healthy and very filling. (This makes a lot, so it's great for parties.)

1/2 c pearl barley
1/2 c long-grain white rice
1 can black beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1 small can whole kernel corn, drained
1/2 c chopped green onions
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1/4 c fresh chopped cilantro (I love cilantro, so I usually use more.)
1/4 c red wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon chili powder (chipotle works really great here, and usually has much less salt than regular chili powder)
Salt and pepper (to taste)
1/2 c extra virgin olive oil

1. Prepare barely and rice according to package directions and set aside to cool.

2. In a large bowl, combine prepared rice and barely with the beans, corn, green onion, bell peppers, and cilantro.

3. To make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, garlic, chili powder, and salt and pepper. Whisk in oil. Pour over salad and toss well to coat.

This salad is even better after it has sat in the fridge for a few ours or overnight.

I'd love to get some more healthy recipes. Everything I make is usually pretty hearty. (Not necessarily bad for you, but certainly could be tweaked to be more health-conscious.)

Oh gosh! I knew this thread was gonna show up again!:eek:
Toots, I would be happy to print, copy and distribute the cookbooks, but I think we need to get Afunn in on it too. ;-) I must say I've thought about it before. It's only fitting that SoWal.com has it's own.
