Here we go folks!

From Walton County Sheriff's Office

This is the social media post we don't want to write. The topic we don't want to speak of. Like Voldamort in Harry Potter where everyone just whispers "you know who".

Well, "you know what" is coming this way like a freight train. We're not even going to say "around the corner", because it's too cliche to deserve it. It doesn't have quite the same sense of urgency.

Spring break. It even tastes like vinegar to type it.

Spring break used to be something, as kids, we dreamt about. Heck, bad country singers wrote songs about it. Now, it's like politics. Something none of us can agree on and causes arguments at the dinner table.

This is an affront.

Walton County Sheriff's Office is ramping up. Holding meetings with stakeholders after addressing some of your concerns on Sheriff LIVE.

We've had internal operational meetings and plan to highlight some of the things we are implementing during the coming weeks to you - our constituents. One thing is certain, the green will be seen.

Now that we've skipped over the denial part of the grieving stage, the next is acceptance. "You know what" is coming. But, when?
We've put together a schedule for those who are interested. What we've found is that people want to be in the know. They want to prepare. Like some sort of zombie apocalypse.

What we also know is that "you know what" isn't just college kids driving down packed in like clown cars and pouring out onto the beach like the good 'ol days - if there were any.

We are also heavily interacting with high school-aged kids whose parents bring them while on break and let them wander around and make poor choices in the moments they look up from scrolling Tiktok and Snapchat. Which they do. Don't we all at some point in our lives?

All that to say, we've listed the high school spring break dates as well as the colleges and universities. So, here goes.

We're here if you need us.

During Spring Break, Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson says there can be as many as 300,000 visitors on any given week through Labor Day.

Adkinson says it's a challenge to manage the additional traffic and crowds, but it will be all hands on deck to let the green be seen.

WEAR ABC 3 News, Pensacola:

Okaloosa, Walton deputies stress zero tolerance policy ahead of Spring Break

OKLAOOSA COUNTY, Fla. -- The start of March ushers in Spring Break, which begins this weekend.

The Okaloosa and Walton county sheriff office's will have all deputies working to make sure Spring Break is orderly and lawful.

Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson says there can be as many as 300,000 visitors on any given week from Spring Break through Labor Day.

Adkinson says it's a challenge to manage the additional traffic and crowds.

Both Okaloosa and Walton counties have a zero tolerance policy.

"It's no questions asked," said Sgt. Kyle Corbitt with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. "If you're caught in possession of alcohol underage or breaking any other law, your going to get charged."

"We are a family vacation spot," Adkinson said. "In the last few years our issues really have primarily been with our very young juveniles."

Last year, Walton County made more than 1,100 Spring Break arrests, while Okaloosa County made 650.

We stayed at Seaside last week. Didn't realize Spring Break started that early. Anyway, we survived it. Very quiet, unless they came around after 9:30 or so. Saw more security than we ever had any time (last spring break was 2010; mistakenly went in October a few years ago during fall break - that was awful.) Everyone was so nice, as always. Good food. Bonus - chat with Robert Davis. See you again. Ellen

Rosemary Beach has DOT lighted signs on each end of town with curfew notice. Yes, the ugly yellow LED signboards that are on wheels.

It’s all fun and games until someone breaks the rules. Panama City Beach Police are cracking down on spring breakers.

“Spring break this year has gone how we expected it to first couple of weeks in March,” Panama City Beach Police Chief J.R. Talamantez said.

They expected to make lots of arrests and so far they have.

“We have had couple of people here and there who want to test the limits and our ability to enforce spring break and currently they’re realizing as they sit in the bay county jail that we can handle business,” Talamantez said.

The beach is packed with many here on spring break, and PCBPD officials say they want everyone to have a good time but stay safe doing so.

Most of the activity is typical spring break antics, but sometimes it crosses the line.

“What we are seeing now is crime associated with drunken behavior caused by college students,” Talamantez said.

Behavior police say will turn a fun time into a long-lasting problem.

“Unfortunately going home with criminal record,” Talamantez said.

So far, they’ve already made hundreds of arrests.

“For adults we’ve arrested over 200 people for spring break since the beginning of march. for a wide variety of things from drinking on the beach to d-u-i’-s to possession of narcotics,” Talamantez said.

About fifty citations so far have been written for drinking on the sandy beach, which is illegal during the month of March. The ordinance was created to control spring break chaos.

“We’ve given a lot more warnings than citations,” Talamantez said. “And the only way we can enjoy that is if everybody follows the law and keeps a very family friendly destination.”

Police say this upcoming weekend they are expecting a lot of people on the beaches as we approach the peak weekends for spring break.
