I just finished One Thousand Splendid Suns. It was an incredible read. We are so blessed to live where we do, to have freedom, without living in a war zone, or the worries of raising a family in the midst of it all. I loved the characters! The writer really made Afghanistan come to life vividly. I felt myself walking with these women. It is just awful that years and years later, they are still fighting.

I am now on to Kite Runner, which I missed reading last year!

I have Thousand Splendid Suns and Kite Runner on my reading list for our maine vacation next week. While here in Hong Kong for work, I'm reading Eat, Pray, and Love (as was recommended earlier on this thread) and that sure is a fantastic book. I'm on the opposite time zone and I usually have a hard time falling asleep when I'm here and I get up in the middle of the night. This book is such peaceful and fun and thoughtful reading, that I fall asleep peacefully and have sweet dreams.

I'm still stuck in my Brahms biography. I fall asleep, too, but not so peacefully...

by Joan Anderson

I loved it, and will read it again when I replace the copy I gave to a lucky woman who lives by the sea. There are 112 differing customer reviews on Amazon.

I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I think Kite Runner was better, but this is a great read too.

SO glad I am not a woman in a fundamentalist Islamic country after reading that!

I LOVED A Thousand Splendid Suns, even more than The Kite Runner. But both were excellent. I also read "Kabul Beauty School" which was very good but not as good as the other two. I also read "Eat, Pray and Love" which was excellent, especially the first two parts about Italy and India (the Part about Indonesia was OK, but not as great as the first two parts which were wonderful). I also read "Middlesex" which was OK but not as good as Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns. I love summer reading because I don't do as much pleasure reading the rest of the year.

I must be a bestseller failure. I gave up on "Eat Pray Love"- hated it. I thought it would be introspective and thought provoking and a beautiful story, but it was nothing but one-liners and cliches. So, 100 pages into it and I'm moving on.

Now I'm on "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and it is excellent like I knew it would be----

I don't think she much likes to play on the computer. (She likes to hang with Hop and the boy when she can get Hop off the internet!) But if you get her in person, she is the life of a party. Funn gull!

(We didn't hijack anything. This is "Summer Reading.")

nohall, I think Miss Kitty wants Mrs Hop to play with us here on the board. we have definitely enjoyed her company in person several times - she is our official sowal dance instructor...

we'll get her on the board some day soon, I feel sure. she thinks she has to know stuff about the computer and this board to participate. we'll have to convince her that all she needs is a name and a tar, and she's off to become head dance wench.
