Have we done this one yet, friends and neighbors? Your olive-skinned touron and beloved NoHall has her annual first-outing-of-the-year sunburn.

Disclaimer: Before you start your :nono1: and scolding, I have issues with sunscreen. Without sunscreen, I get your basic first degree sunburn. With sunscreen I get second degree burns in half the time it takes to get a first degree burn with no sunscreen. I have scars to prove it. I think I would do better to smear Crisco all over my body than to slather on the chemical melanoma in a bottle.

So--what are your remedies? Punzy correctly told me that baking soda would kill the sting (I'm on my way to buy her another box!) BB donated a bottle of soothing aloe vera, which works while it's still wet. (I like mixing it with baking soda.)

I'm looking at a website that offers the following: Vinegar, tea, mustard, oatmeal, (at least I won't be hungry,) Solarcaine, (I left two bottles of this at home!) aspirin (both internally and topically,) anything with aloe vera, Noxema, hydrocortisone, shaving cream, Preparation H, Vagisil, and (of course) Windex.

As much as I hate doing it, vinegar always works... thanks Mom.

I am also unable to wear sunscreen, it burns me way worse than the sun. The only one I've ever been able to use is this:
Shop - Natural Sun Block ? Z-Cote? Sunscreens

I use the Aqua Sport, SPF 15. It is made with zinc oxide and other chalky stuff, so you have to really rub it in or you look ghostly, and it leaves annoying whitish marks on your bathing suit when you first apply. Living here, I have no choice, I have to use something. And it DOES NOT sting, honest. It is a physical sunblock, not a chemical one.

They have some SPF 30 at For the Health of It as of this morning. Good Luck!

Oh, and this little simple and obvious trick - keep all your after-sun stuff like aloe and whatnot in the fridge. I don't know if it does any good for the product, but rubbing icy cold soothing aloe on a hot sunburn feels exquisite.

Real aloe - as in an Aloe Plant. Break off the stalks and rub that on your burned spots, ShowOff! :D

Hope you feel better and are tan soon!

I can wear zinc--I always wore that on my face when I was lifeguarding. I'll check into that stuff; I want to go back out this week.

(Where's For the Health of It? I've heard of it, but I've never been.)

Quit bragging! ;-)

I second the vinegar suggestion.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation!

I think I missed the part about where painful burned skin was something to be proud of. Besides that, I wore knee-length pants today to cover my already-burned thighs and burned my calves. My knees are still white. I look like the flood record or something. I also have three sets of stripes on my shoulders. I'm thinking about wearing a double-shouldered toga tomorrow.

Thanks!
