What a great thread! I loved the cards in the spokes, a banana seat bike never sounded better.

You guys had street lights? It wasn't a conch shell, but my parents had one of those big plastic horns, you could hear it from blocks away...and everyone in the neighborhood knew it was time for pg to be home.

And the previous generation thought that walking to school and back 7 miles in 2 foot deep snow made good stories!

... up hill both ways ;-)

in my neighborhood, kids didn't dare ring the doorbell...we just stood out on the sidewalk and hollered for our friends to come out and play..."oh Peggy, oh Linda, oh Carol, oh followed by the kids name...did anyone else do this or was it just a Cincy thing?

great memories of swinging on grapevines in the woods...riding the bus to downtown and wandering around with girlfriends to all the department stores...rollerskating...walking to the library...penny candy and popsicles from the deli around the corner (finding a pop bottle was a great find since cashing it in for the deposit = candy money)

blessed to have a mom who believed a little dirt was good for you

OMG, you just reminded me of something we used to do...climb little saplings. Never the pine trees, they would just snap on you. We climbed the hardwoods, as far as we could go and would then just hold on and lean in one direction. They'd suddenly bend over, then gently let you down to the ground, then they'd stand back up perfectly. Early bungee-jumping for kids I guess. What a blast!

SWGB,

Don't forget we were practically neighbors when you were growing up and you did go to school with my oldest child. I am sure, if I try hard enough I can find someone who can give me some good stories about you!!!

Oh and of course SWGB remembers stainless steel playground equipment in concrete. He did not live a deprived childhood...

Anything else you want to know???

LOL, dig away.

I do remember surviving the crazy neighbor that installed barbed wire to prevent kids from passing through their yard. Is that you? :rotfl:

We did transition nicely to the round edged lincoln log playground equipment with bark chips for an easy fall. Last time I drove through though Killearn Estates still had the death slides.

We also survived trips to the top of the water tower and the new cell tower when it went up.

Finally, we were deeply deprived, our school buses didn't have air conditioning. Somehow we managed to avoid heat stroke.

Miss Kitty, this was a great post! And while those raised differently might not agree, it is right on in almost every instance as far as how we were raised at the time. We were raised with such risk it is a wonder any of us survived the event.
 We (they) didn't know any better, and maybe better off for it?

You and I Kitty lived parallel lives.....

...my mother was so skinny while she was preganant with me her doctor actually told her to drink beer to put on weight! ..well that in itself explains a lot...

When I was 6 & my brother was 8 he hit me in the head with a hammer. I ran in the house screaming & crying to tell my mother. She looked at me and said that she didn't see any brains running out of my head, so both of you get back outside and play without killing each other because she was waxing the floors(Johnson's Glo-kote) This was in 1953 & I still have a knot on the top of my head.
My mom must have been your aunt  Howdy cuz
Yeah, time for a new tar. For me that is. See above.
Love the new tar

My father had this big old conch shell that they got in Florida ion their honeymoon. he cut off the end and made a horn out of it. When it was time to come home, everyone in the neighborhood would know because of that horn. I finally persuaded him to give it to me once our kids were born. It now sits on the floor next to my dresser and devery once and a while iI will blow the shell for the grandchildren.
My dad had a huge bell that he would ring to bring us home :D

Noone had to yell or ring a doorbell - you were sent outside after breakfast, got lunch somewhere in the neighborhood, and went home for dinner when everyone got home from work.

And you had to wash your feet before bed so you didn't get the sheets dirty from running around barefoot on dirt and asphalt all day.

:clap::rotfl:...loving all y'alls memories!

Fair warning...if you are sitting in the front seat of my car, I still do the iron arm motion when doing a quick stop. Even do it to PawPaw! :D

hnooe...my mom drank and smoked too...I weighed a whooping 5 lbs. 11 oz. at birth...man, those were the days! PawPaw had the nerve to tell the story of how she went home in regular clothes and he couldn't understand why all the women at the hospital when I gave birth still looked pregnant! Uh...maybe because they, like me, didn't smoke and drink and gained like 45 pounds! :rotfl:

Oh, those metal roller skates with the key and the banana seat bikes with the playing card motors! Good times! Kick the Can, relay races, baseball and four square...all played in the street! Getting a drink of water out of the hose (what a refreshing taste!) so we didn't have to go inside. Inside was for sissies!
