I must say that for all of the hysteria about Obamacare, all I have heard so far (and I know it is early stages) from people experiencing the changes firsthand is positive.

And I am very tired of hearing how someone is being shortchanged just because someone else gets something - usually as a trade off for them working hard, not a handout.

Being poor or a minority may make you eligible or give you an edge for a scholarship, but you won't GET it unless you have worked your butt off to get good grades.

There are merit based scholarships and there are need based scholarships.

It can be frustrating when it seems like working hard and not having debt work against you - Papa Scooterbug said that if he had known how the financial aid system worked he would have bought everyone in the family a new car on credit before I applied for aid.

Why do you expect others to pay for your daughter's education if you are able to do so? Isn't that what you are complaining about? People getting perks from the government when they don't need the money?

My guess is that the reason your daughter didn't get that scholarship was that $12k a year in school fees and a 2nd beach home didn't exactly demonstrate a greater need than the other candidates.

If you think Affirmative Action stops after an application decision you're sadly mistaken. Graduates, Employment, etc... the handout continues because of the color of ones skin not the content of their character or effort put forth. Race is a determing factor for future student loans under the Federal Gov't. It never ends...

Federal health care tax credit to help small business | jacksonville.com.
Jeff Guy, the owner of Jacksonville-based 3 Sisters Chocolate, is happy that health care reform is going to give his business a tax credit for something he already does.

"This is going to be a benefit to us; sounds great," he said
Apparently there are some small business owners who think there is a positive piece to the health care reform.

When affirmative action is working properly it isn't a HANDOUT nor is it giving an advantage to someone who is lacking in content of character. It is providing opportunity to someone with equally fine content of character who might not have had the opportunity otherwise.

I received financial aid in college. It was based simply on tax returns. My single mom worked two minimum wage jobs to send me to private schools all my life and then Uncle Sam helped out at the University of Illinois. I waited tables all through college and my mom still worked two jobs to send me some extra money (which I spent on beer but I digress).

Why all the stereotyping and generalizing? If you have the money to send your kids to school- great. If you don't (irrespective of your reasons or your work ethic) the good news is that in this country your kid might have some other options to help them out.

Why do folks who have done well complain that folks who haven't are getting help- like they are being cheated out of something. You've done well. You don't need help.

I am sorry, all I hear is whining and excuses.

You've either got the drive and ambition to get things done or you don't. If someone's skin color gives them an advantage (which I think is rarely the case post college or once you get to a certain level), find something that gives you an advantage.

I have never heard anyone whose intelligence and work ethic I respect use their race as the reason they didn't get a job or couldn't do something. I CAN name 5 things that I can use to give me an edge over someone else applying for the same job - regardless of skin color.

Or to paraphrase Sean Connery in the Rock "Losers whine about affirmative action and not getting scholarships, winners graduate and get great jobs."

Because the democrats expect them to pay for it?

Good point.

I believe there are some Christian parables that speak to this point.
The Prodigal Son: my kids have a hard time w/ this one; they say, "but the PS didn't deserve the father's forgiveness/kindness."
The workers who protested they'd worked longer in the vineyard say the late-comers shouldn't get the same pay--they don't deserve it.

It seems to be a very human instinct to be offended at perceived unfairness, but great moral teachers say we should try to overcome this instinct.

Unless you're seriously disadvantaging your family, give folks more than they deserve.

I was taught that even though some people get some help I don't, I still come out ahead - because my life without that help is a hell of a lot better then theirs with that help.

And who knows - I might need that help someday too. Sheet happens.

I can think of 467 worse things to spend tax money on than helping a hard working person get an education, children or the elderly get medical care, and a starving or homeless person get food or shelter.

And I bet everyone biatching about government handouts is still taking every single one THEY are eligible for or feel they are entitled to. They just call them stimulus jobs, scholarships, homestead exemptions, student loans, tax credits, and tax refunds instead of handouts.

Scooty, wasn't there also something about winners getting the prom queen?

Yes - the original was "Losers whine about doing their best, winners go home and f the prom queen."

At my high school the prom queen wasn't exactly aiming high/a difficult task, so I changed it. ;-)
