It is so sad to see someone with that much potential and so much time and hard work invested in skating not achieve her ultimate goal. True, but athletes push their bodies so much! They stretch their capabilities to the limit to perform in their sports. It's heartbreaking when their injuries put them out of commission because their bodies are their instrument. It's not like, we'll say, a teacher slipping in the hallway and breaking a leg. That teacher can still teach. An athelete who gets injured may not have the same option of continuing their careers.

That's why my husband turned down two sports offers when he graduated from college (being sponsored for the PGA tour and an offer to play for the Dallas Cowboys) and ended up with a Ph.D. instead. I suppose if one had old money, one could gamble more because you'd have that as a backup.
