Math is so easy. It's the only thing that makes sense in the world because it's right or wrong, not shades of gray. If you solve a math problem, it's a victory - it's right, and you've conquered it. But if you write a paper in, say history, one prof may say it's great, and one might say it stinks - not black and white, but shades of gray. I prefer the black and white, but then I'm so good at math that it's impossible for me to understand why others don't see the beauty, the simplicity, and the joy of solving math (and computer programming) problems.

Read G?del, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Hofstadter to see the beauty of math and how it all "works."

I just don't get how smart people can say they don't do math. I really don't.

This is the most frustrating thing about my job as a designer. There's no real answer to "when is the design complete" or "how good is it"...it's so subjective. Which is great when you're creating something for yourself, but frustrating as heck at a client meeting. (Example: women love to have the color sage in their designs, especially a few years ago. I've had no less than three male superiors come back and call it "baby **** green", and have me nix the color!) There's no right or wrong!

It's proven that having your kid study music improves their math skills. Because you innately learn about spatial relationships, so it develops the same part of the brain that does math. A lot of musicians I know are good in math (& computer programming), and vice versa.

Okay...I will admit I aced Geometry. There was some hang up with me and Algebra 1 and it had some to do with the teacher. Math teachers that know how to share their love of math are few. Doesn't your ability to "master" and like math have something to do with your wiring?

Did you have the same college experience I did? Papers not receiving a high grade because the teacher disagreed with my skewed logic. I agree that math is too fun. Always works the same way and the rules do not change.

BR- you are lucky you love math and are good at it. I didn't hate it and I wasn't terrible at it. It just didn't interest me, and now I would have to practically learn everything again to be able to understand even the simplest stuff my son is doing. Since bdarg is the engineer, he gets the math homework honors. I don't do math regularly so I am "out of practice".

It's like my husband- his first degree is a BFA. He is a wonderful painter. And I wish he would pick up a brush tomorrow and start painting again, but to him, it is something he has to be doing EVERY day to keep the groove going, and that luxury doesn't fit into the schedule now :sosad: . But since he does do math every day, his brain is all over it.

OK- I'm going back to rowdy, Katie Blue. Girls night at my house- boys are at Astronomy Club (that knowledge comes in handy at the beach), and Kate and I have broken out the Christmas videos. Frosty is on now. I couldn't hold her off any longer.

By the way: I used to love to solve for x in quadratic equations, and geometry was too much fun. I like math too. I was probably one of the few people who did the Logic Problems in the dell crossword books...but that's almost TMI.

I've actually got a cold and am rather mellow myself tonight. But tomorrow, we're leaving to play at a music festival in FL, so I'll have all the "rowdy" I want this weekend... wish us luck!
