The point of the question is:
1) To make them aware of any conflicts of interest - such as someone's spouse being a lobbyist for an industry the applicant would be working on legislation for etc.
2) To make the administration aware of any questionable associations so that they can then use JUDGMENT or do further inquiries to determine if that person should still be hired.
Just as many actually researched the Obama-Ayers connection or Palin's husband belonging to an Alaskan Secessionist party and found them to be of little consequence, the answer to that question may be researched and determined to be of little consequence as well. :roll:
