While I was in Cardiac Rehab this past summer, one of the other ladies in the class was suffering from a bad case of shingles. Our teacher, who is an RN at Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast told her to tell her doctor to demand he give her Neurontin. It worked!!!

Here is some info I just googled about that, but do more research!!!

What Is Gabapentin?

Gabapentin (Neurontin?) is a prescription medication used to treat the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy -- Gabapentin is approved to be used along with other seizure medications to treat partial seizures in adults and children as young as three years old.
  • Shingles nerve pain -- This medication is also approved to treat the chronic nerve pain that often occurs after an outbreak of shingles (known medically as postherpetic neuralgia).

Y'all are amazing...I had to go to work today because it's homecoming weekend, and I have a game tonight & parade tomorrow morning. After that I'm 1) going to bed until I'm better and 2) checking into your remedies. I have a dear, dear friend who is a doctor, so I'll get him to call me in something if I need a scrip.

Capsasin skeers me--I used the cream once for muscle pain and just about burned my skin off. Then I got the $#@! stuff in my eyes. I ended up with a milk-soaked washcloth plastered to my face for the rest of the evening.

What scares me is that my dad has never had chicken pox. Apparently, though, I can't give him shingles. I can only give him chicken pox. But I had him call his doctor anyway. I guess he could get the chicken pox vaccine they give kids, but the shingles vaccine is pricey. Fortunately he and mom are going out of town tomorrow for a week. (Mom is upset about leaving me, but I would rather get Dad out of here.)

Today I used Solarcaine instead of Lanacaine on it when I got home from school. It actually helped kill the pain for a while...

Thanks for all the advice and well-wishes. I'll be following up on all of them.

I have heard about this drug, too. I think my friend's husband took it for nerve pain in his back.

:)biggrin:...i just read that and it sounds like my bf's cousin's husband's ex-wife's uncle's aunt.)

NoHall, so sorry you are not feeling better. I have not had shingles but had the chicken pox (at age 29 on first trip to Destin :bang:). Aveeno Oatmeal Bath helped tremendously with the itchiness.

This may get your mind off of the pain.......

Be sure to check out the side effects. :D

I never liked oysters until just now...You are my new hero...(I think I have a fever...)

Guess what, sports fans? I now have bronchitis! Yay! That means I am taking a literal handful of medicine every morning (and some 3 times a day.) My doctor demanded that I go to bed until Monday, and that if haven't at least stopped coughing up green globs by then to come pay him a little visit.

I'm taking my laptop with me to bed...

I'm trying to figure out what to expect, how to plan the next 3-5 weeks, etc.

I went to school a half day today and was almost passing out from the pain and general ill feeling by lunch. Tomorrow I HAVE to be there--not because anyone is making me, but because no one can replace me! (I'm not being arrogant...we just don't have anyone to lead the band, and it's homecoming...)

My doctor gave me Lortab for the pain, but it doesn't really help (if I take enough of them, it knocks me out and I don't care anymore.) He told me to spray it with something like Lanacaine, but that doesn't help, either. The Valtrex was supposed to stop it from spreading, but it's spreading.

The good news is that I don't look as bad as the pictures I found when I googled "shingles." (I liked the terra cotta ones, and the slate ones, and the cedar shakes...I've had too much Lortab...)

Has anyone had this %$#@! mess? I wanna know if I'm gonna feel this bad for 3 to 5 weeks, or if I'll just have the rash...Doc says this came on because of stress...go figure...

Just wondering how you are doing after a few days of meds & rest?

I'm pondering that very question right now. I'm supposed to haul myself back to the doctor today if I'm not feeling much better. I don't feel like getting up and going...I think that means that I probably should go...yuck...
