CAA Artist Profile: Walt Foegelle

August 2, 2012 by SoWal Staff

Dr. Walt Foegelleʼs pursuit of art, music, and photography began in childhood. They became his full-time passions after retirement from university teaching and administration.

He works in numerous media including acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, pen and ink, wood sculpture, and photographic art. His artistic influences include Willie Nelson for his creative endurance and longevity, and Emily Carr for her ability to create drama through tonality. He is largely self taught and defines himself as an explorer - always experimenting and learning.

Foegelleʼe current interest is the artistic use of darkness. He believes that we take light for granted because it is the natural condition: when we think of a place or thing, we think of it as being lit, even though light is not part of the place or thing itself.

But darkness, on the other hand, we do not take for granted; while it is also a natural condition, it is actually something extra added to a place or thing.  Darkness does not reveal, but rather changes the quality of light and makes an image more interesting.  Walt believes that contrast and tonality created by darkness are far more important than color.

Foegelle lives in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida with his dog Mo, who always likes his work, and his wife Linda, who frequently does not. You may view Walt's artistic photography at  www.walt-foegelle.artistwebsites.com.

The CAA and the A+ Art Committee would like to invite you to the opening reception of Walt Foegelle's “One Man Show” exhibit at the Northwest Florida State College South Walton Campus August 17th from 5 to 7pm.  We are honored to have such talent among our members and we are so pleased to show the community a sample of Walt’s work.  If you can't make it for the opening reception, Walt's exhibit will be will be on display at the college until October 10th.
