The Grayt Wedding Parade

November 6, 2012 by Jill Tanner

It’s hard to believe that Silas and Natasha Breaux grew up barely 3 miles apart from one another, him in Grayton Beach and her in Seagrove Beach. They never truly met until she was seventeen and he was nineteen. Once the meeting of hearts took place, they were inseparable; well, in heart and soul at least.

Silas went to Savannah College of Art and Design, while Tasha went to the University of Florida. During the four and a half years they spent apart, visits were sparse, consisting of holiday trips and summers at the beach. While the separation was tough, the distance didn’t break their bond.

After college, they both traveled back to SoWal. In 2009, they moved to Madison, WI for a year so Silas could take an internship at Tandem Press, a fine art press. Then, they were “Big Easy” bound, moving to New Orleans where they currently live.

Silas finished graduate school at Tulane, where he is now an adjunct professor. Tasha works full time as a marine biologist. They have quickly become a part of the city and it’s culture. So when Silas proposed, and marriage was in order, they decided to bring a little New Orleans to the beach.

The ceremony took place on Grayton Beach. Balder Saunders strummed the mandolin, as the waves crashed behind him. Tasha’s dress, a gorgeous lace gown with capped sleeves, was purchased from Pearl’s Place in New Orleans. Silas was debonair in his linen suit.

Dawn Chapman-Whitty snapped the shots of the couple’s big day, even leading the way in a truck bed to get the best photos.

While commonly seen at funerals in NOLA, the second line parade has become a big part of the wedding scene as well in the crescent city. Silas and Tasha pulled one off here at Grayton without a hitch. The brass band lead the way from the beach to Monet Monet Gardens. There were parasols and handkerchiefs for all of the guests to hold and wave. The whole party got involved, dancing and singing all the way to the reception.

When everyone arrived at the venue, the brass band jammed outside for a bit, as local favorite, Hubba Hubba set up inside for the reception.

The outdoor venue of Monet Monet Gardens was decorated beautifully. Bella Flora designed the flower arrangements, using an eclectic mix of mason jars and bottles as vases, filled with Ranunculas flowers, Queen Anne’s Lace, and David Austin roses.

All of the dances were in order, as the newly married bride and groom entered. Dinner was served and cake by Petals and Pearls followed. It was a magical night and spirits were high; both in the his and hers signature drinks at the bar and among the crowd.

Since they no longer live in SoWal, they stayed in Grayton Beach for their honeymoon; relaxing, visiting their former favorite hang-outs, and just enjoying each other's company.

With my own wedding coming up, it was a pleasure to attend one with such a spectacular parade. It brought together all of their friends and family in such an exciting way, that I hadn’t seen before.

The grayt parade for Tasha and Silas would surely make the city of New Orleans proud. The memories will surely last a lifetime.

Recipe for Tasha’s drink – Homemade pineapple infused vodka with club soda, mint and a lemon wedge. It was refreshing and delightful.

Recipe for Silas’ drink – Bourbon, homemade ginger simple syrup, club soda and a sprig of mint. This drink was a twist on the classic Mint Julep.
