Laurie Hood of Alaqua Animal Refuge Receives Daily Point of Light Award from George H. W. Bush

Laurie Hood received the Daily Point of Light Award from President George H. W. Bush for going above and beyond to rescue abused, neglected, and homeless animals through her non-profit shelter, Alaqua Animal Refuge.

Laurie feels honored to be chosen as a Daily Point of Light recipient. Since 2007, she has worked to create a safe haven for animals in need, and has saved almost 10,000 animals in the process.

President Bush created the "Daily Point of Light Award" in 1989 to recognize ordinary Americans who take direct and consequential voluntary action in their communities to solve serious social problems.

"Points of Light are the soul of America. They are ordinary people who reach beyond themselves to touch the lives of those in need, bringing hope and opportunity, care and friendship. By giving so generously of themselves, these remarkable individuals show us not only what is best in our heritage, but what all of us are called to become," he said.

Alaqua Animal Refuge advocates the general welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet overpopulation, and adoption services. Located on 10 acres in Freeport, the refuge was formed by Walton County resident Laurie Hood in 2007 when she discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter/adoption organization in the area. Since that time, Alaqua Animal Refuge has helped find homes for more than 10,000 animals.
