Escape to Create Celebrates 21st Season

January 7, 2013 by SoWal Staff

Seaside’s popular Escape To Create artist residency launches its 21st season with the arrival of five artists selected from an international pool of applicants for the renowned creative retreat.

The only artist residency of its kind in the Florida Gulf Region, "E2C" and the community of Seaside have welcomed artists to Scenic 30A since 1993. Drawing audiences from as far as Tallahassee and Pensacola, a variety of cultural programs showcasing the multi-disciplinary artists are offered throughout January and February.

The 2013 performance season opens on Saturday, January 12th at 7:30 pm at Seaside’s RepertoryTheatre with composer-in-residence Alan Goldspiel. An internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, Goldspiel will perform works including Latin classics, traditional Klezmer and original jazz-influence compositions.

He will be joined on clarinet and saxophone by composer Lori Adrovino in a special performance of contemporary chamber music. Drs. Goldspiel and Ardovino teach at the University of Montevallo (AL). As E2C’s 2012 composer-in-residence, Ardovino encouraged her fellow educator and performer to consider the community sponsored residency for his compositional work. Goldspiel will spend the month writing a multi-movement work for soprano saxophone and guitar. The piece is inspired by Middle Age narratives of war that were once performed on an early version of the lute.

As a contribution to the community in support of music education, Goldspiel will also perform and lecture at the Seaside Neighborhood School and hopes to visit music classes in South Walton County schools.

Tickets are $25 each for the world-class performance and are available online at SeasideRepTheatre or by calling The REP at 850-231-0733. Tickets can also be purchased at Amavida coffee locations in Seaside and Rosemary Beach.
