Fresh Air Fitness At The WaterColor BoatHouse

July 15, 2015 by Jill Tanner

The WaterColor Boathouse is a special SoWal place that offers a fun and exhilarating approach to getting fit and staying fit. The team at the BoatHouse offers a refreshing alternative to the same old trip to the gym. The serene spot on Western Lake is a great place to touch base with your inner self as well.

The recently founded fitness workout RUNSUP is an excellent way to get moving with others while enjoying South Walton outdoors. Program leaders Tom Losee (co-founder of YOLO Board), and Darla Ogle take fitness seriously, and deliver it in a unique SoWal environment.

RUNSUP starts at the BoatHouse with a brief run along the trails around the lake and over the bridges of the beautiful WaterColor resort. Then it's a hop onto a paddle board on Western Lake. The whole RUNSUP circuit takes about an hour, and what a glorious hour it is! Take note that beginners are welcome. It's not about competition - it's about getting fit and having fun. You can RUNSUP every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8 a.m.

At the BoatHouse, the surroundings offer more motivation than the average gym. Tom and Darla call it a “fresh-air fitness center”. Another unique opportunity at the BoatHouse is a SUP Yoga class by Shanda Beste conducted on the lake on paddle boards every Sunday at 10 a.m. TRX is also available at the BoatHouse. TRX is a fitness program that works the core and builds strength and balance. Adding to the mix of professionals is Dru Sandy, the new fitness director. She is trained in just about everything under the sun including yoga, TRX and Pilates.

Being immersed in nature is both calming and rejuvenating. You don’t have to choose a hard-core workout to enjoy the BoatHouse. Eco-tours, hikes and paddle lessons are also offered through YOLO Board Adventures.

There are 15,000 acres of state park surrounding WaterColor, making it the perfect place for a guided, fat-tire bike tour from the BoatHouse. There are also kids’ camps where youngsters can learn to paddle with a group.

The retail section in the BoatHouse is stocked with BoatHouse Paddle Club t-shirts and YOLO Board t-shirts. Co-Owner Darla has created a line of jewelry called Western Lake Designs with sterling silver charms featuring the famous Western Lake tree line on different styles of necklaces and bracelets. There are also Swell Pops on sale - organic popsicles made with all fresh and healthy ingredients.

The “fresh air fitness” concept at the BoatHouse draws you in and wills you to experience exercise and natural beauty as an all in one opportunity. The BoatHouse is open seven days a week so that you can stop in and find out from the friendly staff what the buzz is all about.  Ask questions and see how the various activities of the BoatHouse fit your fitness lifestyle.
