June 11, 2014 by SoWal Staff

The 2014 Hurricane Season is here and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Walton County Emergency Management, and Alaqua Animal Refuge are teaming up to prepare Walton County pet owners to have a plan in place in the event of an evacuation.

Whether your pets are big or small, make sure:
•      Their immunizations are current and you have a copy of their records
•      They have a proper identification tag
•      They have a safe place to stay

Alaqua Animal Refuge, the Walton County Sheriff’s Department, and Walton County Emergency Management are hosting an event to educate pet owners and get them the information they need about:
•      Disaster supply kits for pets
•      Evacuation shelter information
•      Pet-friendly lodging
•      How to protect large animals

Bring the whole family for a fun and educational event Saturday, June 21 from 9am-12pm at Alaqua Unleashed, 342 JD Miller Road, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459. Activities will include, a petting zoo, face-painting by Abrakadoodle, food trucks, sno-balls, the Sheriff's Department K-9 unit, agility demonstrations, a fire truck, adoptable dogs from Alaqua, and more.

Dr. Tonia Shatzel of 30A Vet will be on-site micro-chipping pets at a discounted rate of $45. Bring your dog and try out the agility course from 10-11am for a $5 donation. All proceeds benefit Alaqua Animal Refuge.
