That link didn't really provide any explanation, and I don't think what is going on in Arizona is very funny.

McCollum to Push Arizona-Style Immigration Law in Florida

That's probably a better link.

Granted, it's probably just an election ploy for McCollum, but important none the less.

I don't think what is happening in Arizona is very funny either but I surely appreciate the state government there trying to do something to help. The Mexican drug cartels have started targeting random people in Austin. Recently, two tourist from Florida were stabbed in downtown Austin by illegals associated with the drug trade. They were stabbed literally less than a block from the condo that I live in.

It used to be that you could just avoid the bad areas and not get involved in drugs and none of these people would mess with you. But, now they are in downtown Austin targeting random people and are moving closer towards the University of Texas.

I know that this is a lot more than just an immigration issue but it seems like if there were no illegal immigrants the neighborhood in which I would like to attend college would be a much safer place.

These laws won't amount to much (assuming they survive litigation) as long as we are not willing to secure our borders.

Until we do that, there is no real way to control it,

I find all of these proposals to be very distasteful and racially & economically motivated.

It is a FACT that we have fewer illegal aliens in the US now than we did 3 years ago - a million fewer.

It is a FACT that we are deporting illegal aliens at a higher rate than before.

So if the numbers of illegal aliens are already less than they were before and continue to shrink why are these proposals coming out?

If crime is the true concern, changing the basic constitutional principles of our country is not a valid solution - law enforcement and increased security is.

The simple answer to that is because it's an election year.

If crime is the true concern, changing the basic constitutional principles of our country is not a valid solution - law enforcement and increased security is.

Would it make you happy if they checked everyones immigration status anytime someone is stopped?

In May of 2008, Anthony Bologna, a 48-year-old man driving home from a family outing, was murdered?along with two of his sons?by an El Salvadoran MS-13 gang member.

?Edwin Ramos was an illegal alien gang member of Mara Salvatrucha-13 who had been arrested by the San Francisco police on three occasions but because of the City of San Francisco?s sanctuary policy he was released on each time and no phone call was ever made to ICE,?

Crime is the true issue here. I don't want any person who is honestly here for a better life or to help his/her family be deported. But when you have someone who has committed a crime he/she needs to be gone.

We need to make it easier to come over here legally because right now it is much to difficult. But over here we need to enforce the hell out making sure everyone is here legally.

Senator Schumer proposed a bill that would create an electronic national I.D. card. It might take away some of the freedom we have but I would be willing to give that up if it means I can go to college and not worry about being stabbed by an illegal immigrant every time I want to go down to 6th street in Austin.

McCollum's campaign is grabbing anything it can in order to try to catch back up to Rick Scott by primary day. And one of his big problems is that he has done nothing that's proactive to this point (the SPT had a good line comparing his campaign to Weekend at Bernie's the other day) so I think this is his attempt to try to look like he can do something.

The RPOF really screwed up by backing McCollum so early. He's a Bob Dole type who they seemed to pick because he has no original thoughts and could be relied upon to toe the party line 100%. And by backing him instead of Charles Bronson or Paula Dockery, who both seemed less corpse-like, they opened up the door big time for the run by Rick Scott.

Part of why the Arizona law was so stupid was that they ALREADY check the immigration status of anyone who is booked.

The first thing an officer asks you for in any traffic stop or accident is your driver's license - which is a government issued ID card valid for interstate travel.

And if you are an immigrant (non-citizen) over the age of 18 you are already required to have your papers on you at all times.

Schumer's idea is not like a drivers license; it would be an electronic national I.D. card with a bunch of information on it that everyone would be required to carry. I have known illegal immigrants in the past who have gotten drivers licenses, so it can't be that difficult.

If you do it with drivers license then the person would have to be driving in order to ask them for it; with this card any time you commit a crime doing anything the cop will first ask you for your I.D. card.

A second good part of this is that it could have medical history on it so if you were in a car crash and the hospital couldn't get your medical history they could just scan this card so that they would know how to treat you.

Why do we need a new ID card?

I already have a State ID card - a drivers license that also contains all my emergency contact information (Florida lets you enter it online so if you are in an accident the cops can easily get it).

I already have a National/International ID - my US passport.

Anyone with a medical condition a hospital or EMT would need to know wears a standardized medic alert bracelet.

Yes, you can get a license without being a citizen, but that doesn't mean your immigration status is not checked if you commit a crime - the group we should be most concerned about enforcing the immigration status of anyway.
