i got a $1200 dress for $175 on a close-out rack for my wedding.

kimmi i see your point about getting married later etc. i guess there are just more important things i would rather spend my money on. we opted for a 2 week honeymoon instead of spending money on the wedding. and we paid for everything ourselves except pop paid for the reception. it's a whole different ballgame when you are paying for all that piddly crap with your own money - i like spending my parents' money better !

DANG, I say,.,.,.SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED GREEN BACKS AND ELOPE !!!!!

I totally agree. even though we had the big italian wedding. it was important to my mother, and she handled it all. it was really a special day. but if I could do it all over, I would either elope (how easy can you get?) or have a very small family affair. I do feel guilty about the expense to my parents, especially because they were so generous and wonderful and would never let us know the cost to them.

as someone said above, it's not the wedding that matters. it's the days that follow.

She watched every penny, never asked for more, was grateful for all of it and we had a wonderful day. It wasn't the wedding itself, but the reception that cost us. We did have great food, and an open bar, and that really was what escalated the price, because she shopped smart for her invitations, dress,
photographer, florist, video guy, etc - total $15,000-$18,000. It truly was as nice as any wedding she'd been in with her friends and we didn't spend but half what they'd spent. But still a far cry from the $1500-$2000 I spent in 1978. I know people who go into debt, refinance their home etc for their daughters big day. I think that's crazy, but hey it's just one womans opinion.
I remember the pictures....

Oh yes, definitely.

We learned a valuable lesson from a couple down the street; they shelled out $40K a piece and battled it out, then ultimately decided to reconcile.
how stupid!    :dunno:

UUUHHHHH.....NO.....mine was cheap...I wore my SIL's dress, got married in an unairconditioned church (Aug. 12th...the hottest day of the year!) and the reception was at my parents house
There must be something funky about that date....:funn:
:D and worth every penny huh ?
You do know why they say divorce is so expensive!

I agree with all the comments, a wedding doesn't have to be crazy expensive. When I started figuring all the costs out, I thought, I am in the wrong business.... but then I got a divorce and figured out where the real money wuz....

to me having a big wedding is like having a big huge expensive house, i just don't care...there are more important things to me... that's why i live in a cracker box that is almost paid for...

my sis on the other hand always dreamed of a big exstravaganza and that's what she had.....mom and pop are probably still paying for it...
that's why i'm their favorite :rotfl:

I feel like people are getting married later...like in their late 20's/early 30's. And in turn, you are making more money. So why not blow the top off your wedding.

And in the great words of Gfunn..."Wedding? You've already spent that money."

I'm working on the honeymoon now.:clap_1:
i agree. the only part i care about is the open bar!
if i can't have that then there really is no reason to get married

if i ever do get hitched it will probably be on top of the bar at the red bar new years eve 2020

I know...I feel like I'd want a fancy dress. And some fancy jewelry. And an insane bar and band. And crazy flowers. And an insane honey moon.

I have to marry rich.
