I heart Jack Johnson and that CD as well as his other CDs. Not to mention the fact he's easy on the eyes, too...

An iPod is an MP3 player, just made by Apple. Also plays AAC format tunes from the Apple iTunes store.

What's cool about iPods and MP3 players in general is that you can load all your CDs and dispense with carrying a bunch of them with you when you travel. The iPod in particular is the most popular MP3 player, and has spawned a huge aftermarket for accessories. I got a FM transmitter from DLO that lets me play it in my car. I also got a docking station from Kensington that lets me play it back through my stereo. Some folks like to listen when they exercise or ride bikes, too, though not me.

Lots of people enjoy the random play option. It's also replacing CDs or Muzak in a lot of businesses. In Seaside, Bud and Alleys and Central Square records are playing music from iTunes (the PC software for the iPod).

I got a 4GB iPod mini (now discontinued) for long drives (with the FM transmitter) and for airline travel. I've got about 50 CDs on it and a bunch of singles. Probably 800-900 tunes in total. The bigger iPods hold as much a 10X that.

And some cars (like mine) come with an iPod interface already built in so you don't need an FM modulator. It plays using your car's stereo system, and you can control it using the controls built into your car (as opposed to the iPod itself).

As an alternative, my daughter's car has an after-market FM modulator for her iPod. She just got a new 60 gig iPod that plays videos and loves having her entire playlist available in her car. My guess is she's going to ask Santa for an iPod Hi-Fi so she can stop using her laptop as her stereo (even though she does have some nice external speakers).

Her favorite beach song right now? Busta's "I Love My Chick" (the explicit version that doesn't say "chick"). She and her boyfriend sing it to each other.

Miss Tootsie: I  my iPod. I've downloaded many songs (including some of the old Italian Pop songs I used to listen to when I was a wild and crazy 20-something, copied my CDs onto it, made playlists, downloaded my learn-Italian CDs to listen to when I walk to work, downloaded National Public Radio for free to listen to when I walk to work, downloaded the TV show "Office" to watch on the airplane (I got the iPod with the little TV screen -- it's actually watch-able). So, I listen when I walk to work. I also bought a tiny travel speaker that I can throw in my carry-on case and use when I arrive to where I'm going. I bring it to the cottage. I'll show it to you in August when we're there. I also have a nicer speaker at home for it.

The people at Best Buy where I bought it said iPod isn't really the best mp3 player, but that people buy it because of the brand. I don't know what else they'd recommend. But I do think that it's easy to use because so much equipment is compatible with it. If you decide to get one -- after I show you mine -- you'll want to get better earplugs. The ones that come with the iPod aren't very good at all and don't drown out the outside noise.

I was told to get the white one -- that's what I did -- because it doesn't show scratches as much as the black one does.

I also got a little cassette thingy to put in the cassette player of the car so I can use the iPod from the car stereo as well but I haven't tried that out yet.

I'm not typically someone who gets excited about tech toys but my iPod has made me very happy. Imagine having all the music from your house on that little thing... pretty amazing.

It was one of the few CD's the kids actually let me listen to on our trip (on occasional intervals in between the videos they were watching.)

Paula, what kind of earphones did you get to replace the iPod ones? My brother, who's a technofreak, spent around $150 for some Shure phones, but that was too rich for my blood. I researched like crazy and found out the Sony MDR EX71's were great phones for the money, so that's what I got. Mr. Pod recently tried them out with his iPod and said, "Whoa!"
