OL, I said the same thing when I saw JR's pics! Kimmi posted the first pics I'd ever seen taken at Crab Island; before then, I'd never even heard of it. The water is amazing.
JR, anyone who's been there--can you give specifics? Exactly where is it, and if someone wants to go for the day/afternoon/whatever, where do you drive to and park?

Pea/all: I rarely can address these questions since I only get down there once a year, but I can comment on this topic. You pretty much gotta have a boat to get out there, but once there, the water is only about waist deep. It's generally very calm and clear. We rent a boat in Destin Harbor--it only takes about 10 minutes to reach Crab Island. Year before last, we took my step-daughter's boyfriend. He kept saying "when are we gonna get to Crab Island"? He didn't realize we were already there. It's not really an island just a sand bar. LOTS of boats go there on any given afternoon. It's just below the Destin bridge. It's a pretty funn way to spend the afternoon. I understand Jessifunn likes to spend time there. :D

We were there all day saturday and it was BEAUTIFUL! We usually take a boat out there from Bluewater Bay, but this weekend we decided to drive. So yes, you CAN get there other ways than boat. We just drove over the bridge and parked in the parking lot on the left at the VERY end of the bridge. Easy! Hope that helps answer your questions....

It's not easy while hauling a dang case of beer out there to a boat full of thirsty people. I thought I was gonna die one day out there. I decided I'd be the hero and go buy some beer but the current whipped my butt on the way back. Never again folks. Good thing the coast guard station is right there. I almost needed them.

Yep, you have a good-looking family. And that Walker...he is becoming a little boy; looking less and less like a baby. Boy they grow up fast. :sosad:

You could do what Kimmi does and hang out at the docks waiting for "hot guys" to invite you.... then as the day goes by lower your standards :rotfl:

Where is this crab island?
...and is it a good place for playing around in a new sea kayak...for a newbie sea kayaker?
Watch out for drunk boat drivers. They are all over Crab Island and they can kill you quickly.

Thanks SJ. I got to thinking about that after looking at the photos. Newbie kayaker + tippy kayak + boat wake + drunk boaters = either unsafe or embarassing. I need to find a good calm, safe place for getting use to this thing.
