As far as the Florida Governor's race, we had a choice between two flawed candidates. The debate debacle told us all we needed to know about Sink and the 75 5th Amendment answers told us what we needed to know about Scott. In the end people were afraid of encouraging big spending and higher taxes by electing a Democrat so they voted Republican. I would think Scott is on a short leash.

The national results represent a rejection of the big government policies of the past two years and a recognition of the dangers of huge deficits and higher taxes. The vote was not an endorsement of the Republican Party because people have not forgotten the mistakes made from 2002-2006. I would think the Congressional Republicans are on a short leash.

The Tea Party won 113 of 139 races they had candidates in. (MSNBC's numbers) The movement had some big losses (Angle, O'Donnell) but several big wins as well ( Paul, Rubio) and produced the excitement that fueled the historic results of last evening. Whether you like it or not the Tea Party will play a role in 2012.

One other public figure is on a short leash: Barrack Obama.

Clarification- were the 139 candidates officially TP candidates? Or were many Republicans that Tpers glommed on to because they weren't Democrats? Calling them all "Tea Party candidates" is kind of a stretch.....

Also, President Obama's first name is spelled Barack. I only noticed this because it was (and maybe still is) misspelled on the Walton County Tea Party Patriots' website, which is a little pathetic.

To analyze what he termed ?the ass-whupping that has been delivered to the Democrats,? Jon Stewart brought out his guest, presidential historian Michael Beschloss. Beschloss pointed out that Truman, Eisenhower, and Clinton suffered similar losses for their parties in midterm elections and were reelected. Stewart said, 'So in other words, it?s a great night for Obama!'

Obama's speech today gave me hope. (Although some of the messages here do not.) He didn't say he wanted me to sit in the back of the bus, didn't describe me as extreme or say I was his enemy. He spoke of consensus and cooperation in dealing with our troubles. I'm more optimistic now than I've been in four years.

Me too. With this much needed balance of power, I believe we will actually make great strides in the next 18-24 mos. I heard a little of the President's comments today and what I heard was amazing political maturity. A man, who ten months ago was fighting hard for a super majority, sounded humbled overnight. I predict by the end of his term, I will have a few things I like about him, too. I'm really excited about that!! :D ;-)

I'm confident that you will be able to find a few things that you'll like about him in the next 6 years....;-)

Obama's message has not changed - some are just choosing to actually hear it now.

12 new Democratic Senators, 9 new Democratic Governors - not quite the arse whooping that was foretold.

If only the Republicans understood compromise, they'll stonewall anything that isn't a full repeal instead of working together to fix it.

SWGB, Republicans had such great examples of Compromise from their fellow Democrats that I am sure they learned this lesson well, after all the Democrats and Obama were shining examples of compromise these last two years.

Good analysis...I kinda dismiss this "end of the world" and "grand new beginning" rhetoric. I think it will be just be more general gridlock. You know, folks, that they have about two weeks of "work" before the tax cuts expire, and we will see the biggest tax increase in history. I'm truly ambivalent about that, at his point...

I wouldn't expect to much to happen in the next 2 years. Lots of bickering will probably be the norm.

I find it hard to believe it is the biggest tax increase in history when I will simply be paying taxes at the same rate I did earlier in my life*. :dunno:

*But I lived in a different state, so ALSO paid state income tax, so I am still coming out ahead.

Must say though, I am very disappointed in how the Florida results came in - I really think Pleat, Sink, and Christ were HUGELY better choices for our state than their opponents.
