The icing on the cake would have been a Reid loss. His win was the biggest bummer of the evening for me. The highlight was the moment I realized Nanci Pelosi lost her gavel. I really hope she exits (stage left of course :D) completely.

All I could see when I heard the news...is that over sized gavel she carried in for the health bill like a jerk... tied to her tale... would be super happy if only Reid could have lost....

Good analysis...I kinda dismiss this "end of the world" and "grand new beginning" rhetoric. I think it will be just be more general gridlock. You know, folks, that they have about two weeks of "work" before the tax cuts expire, and we will see the biggest tax increase in history. I'm truly ambivalent about that, at his point...

Not to mention a federal budget, AMT adjustments, and unemployment expiration. They'll likely punt all of this down the road to the new congress by passing stop gap measures.

Plus early next year we have the dreaded debt ceiling problem. That will be interesting.

I'm confident that you will be able to find a few things that you'll like about him in the next 6 years....;-)

This crossed my mind as well. He might make another term with a balance in place. But, he's got a lot of making up to do in a short period.

Scooterbug, I heard him state that the American People have spoken and he will listen. Much different from his platform of the last year and ten months. When you have exit polls, by CBS I'd like to add, showing the disdain with legislation, that pretty much tells all. He heard it loud and clear. And, he's right. If he doesn't listen, he won't have a shot at a second term. Let's see what he does. I'm very optimistic for him.

I really wouldn't mind him staying on for another term now. A few more seats in the senate in 2012 would be nice, but generally things are pretty well balanced at this point. Controlling the House with a 60 seat majority is a huge win!

I am also very optimistic for him - I think he has done a great job and will continue to do so.

But I've also been listening to him for years - not to what people think he is saying, not to analysis of or reactions to out of context soundbites, and his message has not changed.

Love how yesterday he was the anti-Christ, now some think he should serve another term just because the Republicans now have a majority in the House.

I feel the same, although I am not advocating another term just yet. ;-) I am open to the possibility of another term, whereas before I wasn't. I love our system!!

I got that "biggest tax increase in history" from CNN. It may have been "bloviation". This is a subject that runs to the heart of the problems in the US. I philosophically feel we need to just let these tax cuts expire, and make severe across the board federal budget cuts, and just accept it. I've made mention of this before. We could spread the budget cuts out, reducing everything, say, 3 or 4 percent each year. Including defense. (I'm just a dreamer...)

Obama's speech today gave me hope. (Although some of the messages here do not.) He didn't say he wanted me to sit in the back of the bus, didn't describe me as extreme or say I was his enemy. He spoke of consensus and cooperation in dealing with our troubles. I'm more optimistic now than I've been in four years.

Totally agree, he actually speaks more rationally than some that support him.

At least he does not paint everyone with the same brush and is above the hatred and anger so many have.

I was impressed.

Governors act as a back stop to the legislature. My hope would be that he puts that veto pen to work like Jeb used to. We need someone like that in the governors office. (The potential down side: another Terry Schiavo.)

I think you will see a lot more "down side" than there ever was with Jeb Bush. Bush was at least a Floridian for more than 4 years; had run a pretty successful real estate/development business, although some would say there were questionable dealings here and there, neither he nor the company were ever fined for fraud; he did quite a bit for both economic development and trade for the state; he is the brightest of the Bush bunch; and he did have the interests of Floridians at least on his agenda. Yes, I think we are in for a much more unpleasant ride with Mr. Scott than we had with Gov Bush.

Well I don't have your crystal ball :D, but we're ultimately going to find out how good or bad of a governor he is. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise.
