I do not think people are worried as much about the four legged predator obviously as they are the two legged variety. We spent a couple of nights at Chickasaw State Park a few days before Christmas a few years ago, no one else was there staying in any of the other 11 cabins. We were down in the cove with no one else around. And people would come riding through by the cabins that lived farther down the highway. Don't think for one minute that they are not capable of committing crimes. Everyone is capable of that, just not everyone would do such a thing, and they are out there, everywhere. If you did not have a gun with you, how would you fight off someone that sneaked up on you when in your tent, or broke into your cabin. By the time you call the Park Ranger, or 911, it could be too late. I'm all for it.

They are more than 80 ways I could defend myself against someone without needing a gun. The presence of a loaded gun makes me more nervous than the idea that I wouldn't have one in a statistically improbable scenario.

I've never needed or wanted a gun in the wilderness or a national park - and I have spent a great deal of time there. I guess I just spent my time enjoying the beauty of the wilderness and not being constantly afraid of my fellow man. Other people were also there to enjoy the wilderness, not to prey on us.

Criminals are lazy people who choose easy targets - few would put in the effort necessary to trek far enough to get to me. Also neither myself nor my wilderness companions have ever met that description - even when I was 18, wearing a snoopy life preserver (the only one small enough to fit) and guiding groups of 11-12 year old girls on canoe trips.

I'm not saying that dangers and dangerous people do not exist in the world, just that I'll take a brain over a gun in a duel anyday.

If I recall that guy was responsible for the deaths of an elderly couple in NC I believe and another woman also? I guess people should not keep weapons in their homes for protection either??? We have a 32 caliber pistol and two rifles, one of which is similar to a AK47. A cousin of mine carries a pistol on him at all times, he has a permit to carry it. And in Memphis you need it. Crime is everywhere, even in Florida. The panhandle area I am sure is not crime free. And as for state parks, Chickasaw has a camper area that is easily accessible by car and by foot, and so is the area for tents. The nearest police from Chickasaw is 8 miles away. The park ranger's home is in the park but probably a mile or two away.

We've discussed the whole "I need a gun to protect my home" nonsense ad nauseum in another thread.

Common sense, locks (that you use), and a dog all rank above a gun in effectiveness for home security.

Air, food, and water are needs. Everything else is up for debate.

Thank goodness for the 2nd amendment! We have the right to choose for ourselves about gun ownership.

I would never camp without someone in my camp packing heat......and, depending upon the area. When I go to the mountains, I am handed a gun. Camping in Key West, we didn't need guns.

I used to bike regularly at Silver Comet Trail. In 2006, a woman riding was yanked off her bike, raped and beaten beyond recognition. She was identified by her dental records. The trial was just over last week. I only went out there a couple of times by myself, but we really loved getting out there. It's a well-run (operated), very busy (in sections) trail and I refuse to ride on city streets. Haven't been since that incident. I don't know what mile marker she was at when attacked, but when by myself, I'd go as far as mile 7-8......after the Depot, it gets a little spooky to me.

It's nice to enjoy nature.....unfortunately, there are nutjobs out there who can snatch our freedoms faster than changes in our Constitution.

That's only when the effectiveness is measured statistically. Statistics are meaningless on a case-by-case basis. Use statistics to help manage risk but don't live by them and certainly don't expect others to.

BLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMA

There that covers all of the right wingers.

Guns in parks? Guns in bars and restaurants? Guns in yo undies? Guna Guns Guns

What is it about packing one that makes sense if you are not in law enforcement or are not out hunting? I'm glad that law is not in effect that would allow guns on beaches or someone would shoot me when I politely ask them to fill in a hole, remove their crap from the beach that night, etc. Sometimes I am not so polite. That's when the stuff would hit the sand.

So BLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMABLAMEOBAMA then BLAMEDEMOCRATSBLAMEDEMOCRATS
Then whatever arm everyone

even bears

We americans love our guns.
We build them by the millions and buy them by the millions. Leagally or Illegally.
Notice that our car manufacturers are going out of business, but the gun business is not complaining.
Guns are important to us as Americans. Without our guns, we might as well be British.

Yes it is the person behind the trigger not the gun that kills, But without a gun the person is likely to not kill.

Guns have not served our people well. Lots of Accidents, lots of stolen guns, guns kill people. There is only one reason for a handgun and that is to kill. If you deceide to use it correctly, the only possible outcome is death.

If I'm camping in a national park, I am not going to feel safe because there are more people there with guns, to the contrary I and everyone else is not safer. Guns are used to kill. They service no other purpose. Handguns are for killing people. The only result from more guns in people's hands is more dead people. Not safer people, deader people.

If you want to carry a gun carry it. I hope anyone reading ths never has to use their gun. The only result will be death.
If you want a gun for protection in your house then by all means have a gun. Have 10. but for that gun to protect you you have to protect the gun(s).
Bad guys do not buy guns they steal them from us. Then that gun cannot protect you anymore.

More guns in more places means more shootings. That' all. Not safer people.

I do not have a gun and I am safer than those of you who have one.
