I do not think people are worried as much about the four legged predator obviously as they are the two legged variety. We spent a couple of nights at Chickasaw State Park a few days before Christmas a few years ago, no one else was there staying in any of the other 11 cabins. We were down in the cove with no one else around. And people would come riding through by the cabins that lived farther down the highway. Don't think for one minute that they are not capable of committing crimes. Everyone is capable of that, just not everyone would do such a thing, and they are out there, everywhere. If you did not have a gun with you, how would you fight off someone that sneaked up on you when in your tent, or broke into your cabin. By the time you call the Park Ranger, or 911, it could be too late. I'm all for it.
They are more than 80 ways I could defend myself against someone without needing a gun. The presence of a loaded gun makes me more nervous than the idea that I wouldn't have one in a statistically improbable scenario.
I've never needed or wanted a gun in the wilderness or a national park - and I have spent a great deal of time there. I guess I just spent my time enjoying the beauty of the wilderness and not being constantly afraid of my fellow man. Other people were also there to enjoy the wilderness, not to prey on us.
Criminals are lazy people who choose easy targets - few would put in the effort necessary to trek far enough to get to me. Also neither myself nor my wilderness companions have ever met that description - even when I was 18, wearing a snoopy life preserver (the only one small enough to fit) and guiding groups of 11-12 year old girls on canoe trips.
I'm not saying that dangers and dangerous people do not exist in the world, just that I'll take a brain over a gun in a duel anyday.
