Hey everybody! Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. It's going to be the house that SoWal built! We are downsizing, dang a bunch of house cleaning. I don't want to vacuum another day in my life. We're going for around 12-1300 square feet. That is plenty of room for 2 people and hairy kid:lolabove:

Beach Crazy, you are my heroine. I am ready to downsize right this minute. I'm tired of a big old house and the kids don't want to vacuum any more than I do. I wish I had only 1300 square feet to look after!!

I'm with Kurt about the bamboo. It really is beautiful stuff.

Bamboo is the way to go. Hard as concrete but ecofriendly as it is a renewable resource. No off gassing, biodegradable, little or no petroleum depending on the finish.

And beautiful!

Renewable? You ain't kidding. Ever tried to kill or contain bamboo plants? They're as bad as kudzu!

I'm just surprised that they're "hard as concrete."

I have 50-year-old red oak, which are also like concrete, but so easy to clean. My parents and one of my BFFs used laminate recently, and both have been happy with it.

Welcome back BC....have missed you. I too am getting ready to rip out all that DA** carpeting in my house. Hate, hate it. I have been looking at laminate, but now I might look at the bamboo. Congrats on the new house!!!!!!!

Love the idea of downsizing. WE want to do the same....less space. Just not much of a need for family to be home maybe, 4 weeks a year. Good to have you back.

My mother was one of the first people to get Pergo. She put it in the kitchen because the salesman told her it was better for a kitchen than hardwood. So not true. Within the last year or so the laminate has begun to peel around the edge of some of the planks, and some have bubbled. I think the floor has been down about 10 years, maybe a bit longer. It was put in at the same time the wood floors in the rest of the house were refinished. The other floors look great -- no doggy nail scratches despite two dogs and four granddogs. The Pergo looks like someone printed out a picture of wood and glued it to her floor.

Many of the rebuilt houses in New Orleans are using bamboo. It's gorgeous.

I love the idea of concrete! The bamboo floors are BEAUTIFUL! They are just as expensive as wood, I think, but very interesting to look at.

Is the bamboo flooring pricey? I see it on HGTV all the time and it looks beautiful. But what the heck is off gassing??? I gotta go google that to make sure it isn't what it sounds like.

 30Gay thanks for the giggle about fake men=fake wood.

Same thing has happened with mine, Punzy. And...it's noisy. Mine's only been down about 4 years. mr. dd goes into a rage every time he looks at it.
