I want to talk to you right now about a fundamental threat to American democracy... I do not refer to the outward strength of America, a nation that is at peace tonight everywhere in the world, with unmatched economic power and military might. ...

The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation.

In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities, and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we've discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning.

I'm asking you for your good and for your nation's security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel... I have seen the strength of America in the inexhaustible resources of our people. In the days to come, let us renew that strength in the struggle for an energy-secure nation.: Jimmy Carter's 1979 speech asking America to face up to it's stupidity...do the problems described sound familiar to any of you flag waving repubs out there? how many of you called carter an idiot peanut farmer when he gave that speech? what goes through your brain as you watch the dollars spinning at the gas pump today?

people didn't listen then, and some people will never learn to hear the words no matter what. owning things and consuming things is still the american way. good try though.

i'm trolling for the sunbelt knuckleheads who hijacked the republican party offering never ending war, religious intrusion into government, fear posing as patriotism, intolerance and racism, and deficit spending rivaled by no one. you wouldn't happen to know anyone out there that signed on to that would you?
Gee, Bob, are you patting yourself on the back once more for being a staunch Republican? I am sorry you feel that I, and other moderate Republicans, are religious( I'm not a churchgoer)but believe our religious heritage is one of our nation's treasures. warmongering (two tours in Vietnam because it was my duty at the time) patriotism ( because I believe in the majority of the working American public and their willingness to do the right thing, not fear). Intolerance (the belief that what I earned and live on is for me and mine and not some welfare recipient who has never worked a day in their life but are capable of doing so). Racism (I don't know where you come up with that one from. Again, you don't finish a military career by being racist) You of all people should know that. Deficit spending (brought on not only by a Republican president pressed to do so by his party but also by a Democratic Congress totally fiscally irreponsible).
Everything you post, to me, appears to lend itself more to a socialistic trend rather than one of capitalistic free enterprise. But then, you're just a really good Republican POed with his party.
