I think the forest is being missed here. DS kids are a gift from god just like any other child. Parents of DS kids might say a better gift than a "normal"" child because of the special love and lessons that would not otherwise be gained. Anyone who brings up the subject in a negative way not only lacks any perception of such perspective but also brings in to question their own judgement.

The use (and abuse) of this story is what I think is being missed. Family decisions when it comes to birth defects are heartwrenching, and every family, depending on the medical issues, can't just "choose" to keep the baby. I feel bad for all the families that have had to make such a horrible decision and are now reading that families that can't make the Palins' choice are evil and wrong- that is the message being sent.

I am happy it has worked out for the Palins. Sadly, it doesn't work out that way for everyone.

Gov Palin will certainly get the evangelical vote.
She's all for choice when it comes to teaching Creationism in public schools, but not so much when it comes to women's health.

I think she is an interesting VP choice. I do think her gender has something to do with her being chosen.
When it comes to balancing a budget, well, what's Alaska's budget versus, say,Florida's? What about the depth of McCain/Palin foreign policy experience?
Well, the next few weeks are going to be interesting.
May the best candidate win.

Thanks for the links.

Your concerns have been what I keep coming back to in my mind.

I have no idea how many budget problems Alaska has had to deal with during Palin's tenure, but I would suspect due to the smaller population and oil money available that there hasn't been the challenges for her as many other governers face. Has she really been put to the test other than being willing to right some wrongs within the system, which is admirable but imo not enough to qualify one for being "a heartbeat away".

And how much foreign policy knowledge does she have? (as I assume she isn't experienced in this)..I haven't found info on this yet. Other than she was too busy figuring out her governer responsibilities to keep up with Iraq deployments, etc.

Educate me.

Nobody said anyone was evil for making another choice? Bob made a terrible comment about her being 44 and that she took the risk. Obviously, many peope thought that it was rude. Nothing more to it.

You aren't getting it- the GOP is using this story to further the pro-life aspect. It is pretty smart politics, actually. To families that have had to make a decision to end a pregnancy due to medical issues, and to pro-choice people, seeing her decision to keep a DS baby at the top of her "list of qualifications" is off-putting, to say the least.

Great questions! It will take time for us all to learn about this "unknown". I have been conflcited since hearing this yesterday. In my quest to stop being too knee jerk and foot in mouth, I am sitting back and waiting still on both parties to tell me more. Of course, I am also relying on great posts like this to get that ball rolling!

Shocking, the GOP puts nominates a VP who appeals to their base and use it in the campaign. The democrats bash it in any way they can. And round and round they go.

And vice versa....SJ has a name for that.

Try going to the Anchorage Daily News. It should have a wide variety of stories to help you learn more about Alaska and Palin. Being next to Russia, Alaska has a number of active military bases. Budget issues are also extensively discussed in this major paper for Alaska.
