The Bible-toting, sometime Art teacher is chiming in, Bob. (I swear I'm gonna come down there, kidnap you, and take you to a Oral Roberts t.v. marathon by force, not because I like him but because you deserve punishment.)

Humans are getting taller, for one thing. SWGB is starting to recognize poorly-constructed sentences, for another. Evolution hasn't stopped. (SWGB! Behave! Stop insulting the cockroaches, which happen to be pretty highly evolved...er...I mean stop making personal attacks on real estate agents because it's just not nice...)

Last I heard, we were also close genetic relatives to dolphins, and I just read a book (written by a Christian--gasp!) that discusses our direct link from starfish. It has already been pointed out that science is a series of best-guesses to the questions of philosophy. The questioning and the guessing is, in my undogmatic and unscientific opinion, the best part of the process. Once we find all the answers there will be nothing more to do than sit around and watch Oprah all day.

Or Fox news. (Oh geez NoHall - you so left that open for me!!:rotfl:)

I know where Google is. I figured that you could answer a simple question as you bash others views in dealing with the subject. ;-)

Your wasting your breath on a guy who shares the views of a guy living for 9 years in an apartment with no toilet so that he could save his poop to throw on attendees of the Republican convention. He also believes that Christians who are beheaded by Islamic fascist deserve it. In his case, I need no more convincing that he evolved from apes.

who has ever looked up science stuff on Snopes.com ? Does E really = M(CC) ? Most of us cannot really fully understand the reasons why certain proofs (mathmatical) are proofs, rather than simply theory. We just take it for granted because we were taught that it was so. Who wants to question the great thinkers? Aren't they supposed to be experts? Experts may be experts, but too often, the available data and information is very limited, and therefore incomplete. The universe is ever-changing, and therefore it could be concluded that science is ever-changing. We get stuck into thinking that the way something is on Earth is true for the entire universe, but a quick look outside the box will enlighten us that the universe holds many unknowns and that in theory 1+1 is possible to equal only 1. Again, our history and knowledge of the universe it too limited to show any proof to be a fact, universally.

Great point. Even the medical profession is an art. I remember having a discussion with my surgeon. My thought is that the surgeon is the expert. The doctoring business is exact science. What I learned is that we know too little about something as simple (which ain't so simple) as the human body (body, soul, spirit, mind, etc...) to be an expert at it. (This is not to take away from the intelligence of professionals in the medical field, in any way.) If we cannot understand ourselves, how the hell are we supposed to be able to understand what makes up God? Our minds and perspectives are too limited. For a long time, people thought that the Earth was the center of the Universe. I think they were mistaken -- the mind/body is the center of the Universe. Everything evolves around one's own self, at least it seems that way. We are always right (yeah, right!). Surprisingly, that may be very accurate. There is no right or wrong principles to guide one's own life. There is only one way which is right for each person, and that will vary from person to person, animal to animal, plant to plant, particle to particle.
SJ, you have been on a roll lately with some great answers. THanks!!

i would agree that christian concepts should be taught in christian schools.

yes. but see below

Agree with Jdarg - creationism has no place alongside evolution.

I realize I may be solidly in a minority here - but IMHO -religious views should be taught at home and in church - religions should be taught at school like Ms. Kitty's son's school) - there would be MUCH less fear in this country if there were greater understanding and compassion for those of differing beliefs/religions.

I have no interest in my children being taught creationsim IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL as I do not for a second believe in this fairy tale either - but for those of you who do believe, you can teach this yourself or have your church do it (which is much more appropriate).
Thanks

very well stated chickie.

She meant that you were personally attacking another person on this board. We attack candidates on both sides and Britney Spears freely.
:lolabove:ain't it the truth?

As someone who believes in evolution and considers creationism a myth, I would have to say that, since there are many people who believe in the myth, it would be unfair for schools to not acknowledge creationism as a minority belief--but not teach it as science. For me, it would be like schools teaching the reality of Santa Claus in kindergarten. It would be unfair to the parents who prefer their children to believe the myth. The kids will figure it out eventually for themselves as they develop intellectually--well most of them anyway;-)

very well stated ronf.

That's it, NASA needs more bible toting art majors to set them straight. When the shuttle lifts off, you just have to believe.
:rotfl:you be so bad. but so right.
Is that any different from selling them crappy real estate?

You've proven the link between cockroaches and real estate agents.

I'm calling the grammar police on that sentence.
:rotfl:you need a spanking.

we have had this discussion before in great detail. and I learned much from many of you in earlier discussions. but this thread is more nasty than informative after looking at some posts.

this is what I have learned about evolution in school, given my child's current experience in first grade:

the science of big bang and evolution is presented and discussed and the kids get to read a wonderful big bang book that really captures their attention and gets them excited about what we have disccovered, what we know and what we may know about how we exist. imaginations are soaring and interests are peaked. well, at some point the children will compare the science of evolution with other theories that are not science based (such as ID, creationism, and other beliefs that exist in other cultures). the children will have an opportunity to share any of their own beliefs (or make them up using their imaginations). families will be encouraged to continue the discussion at home, a place where we can talk about any additional beliefs we may want to share with and pass on to our children.

so, yes. science class can include philosophical discussion, and should. if a teacher does not present the facts along with other relevant thinking (i.e. that other theories exist), then she isn't giving the whole story. evolution is science - but it does have many meanings to different folks all around the world.

but no. do not teach christian based creation theory to my child. lump it in with all the rest of the "other non-science theories" and give it the attention it deserves so children can be truly educated. but do not tell my child that it is science. it is not.

and please do not try to convince me that ID is science. I know it draws from science, but it is still just a pretty story.
