Here are some my favorite cool summer destinations: San Francisco, Portland Oregon (and Maine, too), Boston and surrounding countryside especially the Bershire Mountains, Saugatuck, Michigan, and the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains near NYC.

Chicago is pretty far north for you but it can be a real steam bath so unless you're a diehard Sondheim fan like me, I'd give it a pass.

What is the weather like in Boston in July?

I've heard NYC can be brutal in the summer. Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, and the Rockies - US or Canada sound great!

Other than going to the beach, of course. ;-) We're heading down in June but I'm hoping for a weekend in Chicago in mid-July. There's a Stephen Sondheim music festival in Grant Park and we plan on being there. I'm in sticker shock about the summer hotel rates, though. :sosad: I have some serious internet hunting to do!!

How about you?

Mermaid, unfortunately the Sondheim festival falls smack dab in the middle of the Gay Games so hotels are really at a premium. I don't see anything for much less than $200 a night that weekend, but let me know if that's any better than what you are finding, and I can give you some websites to look at.

As for our summer, we have our week in Sowal from June 10th -17th (and I see you & Merman will be there as well.) Other than that we will be getting a pool pass and a zoo membership and taking full advantage of them (hoping for a mild Chicago summer!)

Mermaid, I second everything you listed above! All those are perfect choices, & yes, Chgo is very hot in summer, as I'm sure it is in Indy too!

Hey, aren't the Gay Games out in the 'burbs this time? Maybe hotel rooms are still at a premium. Wow!

Our window of opportunity is very limited this summer. We're going to Elbow Cay in the Abaco's Islands, Bahamas, June 10 - June 17th (we'll have to talk and share vacation stories, Inletbchdweller!) The 3 of us have never been anywhere so remote and are really looking forward to some beautiful solitude. Then hopefully toward the end of August for a few days, we can get down to Sowal right before school starts. The rest of our summer will be filled with band camps, summer school, etc. I'll be doing lots of driving & dropping off.

There are events throughout the city; some are even out in the Crystal Lake area. So there is likely a premium on hotels all over. Here's a map I found detailing the events and locales:

IMHO, August in NYC is worse than St. Louis, and that's say a lot--and I mean a lot.
My recommendation would be Seattle/Seattle area, Kurt. Go long enough and you can do both Seattle and Vancouver. I haven't made it as far as Vancouver, but I never hear anyone speak of it with ooohing and ahhing like crazy.
Mermaid, our only concrete trip is the June Sowal trip. Mr. Pod is trying to figure out a time for a long weekend away--sans kiddos--and his vote is for Seattle. I might tag along on a work trip or two, though he goes to NYC in August, and you've already read my thoughts on that...doesn't stop me from going, though.
Mermaid, find a nice hotel out in the 'burbs and use the train to go into the city. I've done that several times when hotel prices right downtown are too crazy; I actually enjoy doing Chicago that way. It's easier to drive to the train station than to navigate the traffic and pay the outrageous parking fees.
Hey, Miss Mer--I thought you had a drive-by St. Louis trip in May in the works...? :dunno:
