for Kurt: upstate NY is gorgeous in the summer--warm, and not humid. For a different experience--try Saratoga during the racing season (August)--part of the track was featured in Seabiscuit--the whole experience is quite "high class" horse racing (complete with women in fancy hats)--Saratoga is a wonderful artsy place with excellent restaurants and some nice shops--the Philadelphia symphony is in residence at the Saratoga Performing Arts center (bring a fancy picnic and sit on the lawn); other days you can have outings in the mountains nearby--drive to Vermont for a day and stay at the Equinox Hotel. (bring golf clubs and money--Orivis outlet is in Manchester).

Our family will spend late June-early July moving to Memphis; then we'll take daughter to college (ironically, back to upstate NY; son is staying in Boston)--so no family trip this year to SOWAL. However, I can't have a summer with no beach, so Mr. New Yorker and I will try to grab a 4-5 day period and drive down. It'll be weird tho--our kids have grown up at this beach, and I'm having a hard time thinking of them not being with us.

Kurt, I suggest that you drive the Maine coast, starting in Portland and ending in Bar Harbor. It is absolutely beautiful in July. The native Mainers think that it is too hot (they have about 4 days when it reaches into the 90's) but I always thought that it was great. The towns that you will pass through are charming and you can't beat the lobster rolls sold along the way!!! I find it to be a very magical place.
Oh, I so agree with you on this one, Gypsea! I love Maine, especially the very things you mention--the coast and the lobstah rolls!
The thing I do hate are their bugs, though. Those huge black flies that bite and draw blood--horrendous! (But probably worth the trip anyway...)

I can relate to the "no kids" part...different but good. I have learned to make my own traditions.....so I do not feel sad that my girls are not with me. Occasionally, I will eat or go to a place that is their favorite. That is bittersweet.

Have you been to the Abacos before??? They are great!!!
No, but we're looking forward to it. I started searching all kinds of places. It was possibly going to be Costa Rica or St. Lucia. Then one link after another put me in touch with the Abacos. It sounded right up our alley. We'll definately check out Guana Cay and all those other little islands with the boat we've rented.

Where in CR will you be? Let me know what you think.

Newyorker, the same thing has happened with our family! Last July we took kids and friends down to the beach with us, but this year not. Both of ours will be working and it's just not possible to have a summer family vacation. In fact, I think this will be the wave of the future for us since one's already in college and the other's nearly there. And yes, ours grew up at the beach as well. Funny not to have them with us (but also very nice to have my husband all to myself at the beach  so it's not really a hardship!) What we're doing instead is having a family winter beach vacation. The day after Christmas, we're all heading down to the beach to ring in the new year. We picked a house with a heated pool so the kids will still see plenty of swimsuit action. ;-)

And funn action. Those kids aren't going to know what hit them. Not to mention...Miss Kitty is going to be there. New Year's is the new black.

I would like to go somewhere cool(er) in July or August in North America in or near a major city - any suggestions?
Quebec City would be a great choice. It's beauty rivals San Francisco, and you will not find better dining anywhere. You can travel to Montreal for a side trip.

Thanks - I am intrigued by Montreal but visited with a resident yesterday who said it can be hot in the summer. I don't know anything about Quebec City but I'll check it out.

I have always wanted to go to Maine coast and Boston.
