for Kurt: upstate NY is gorgeous in the summer--warm, and not humid. For a different experience--try Saratoga during the racing season (August)--part of the track was featured in Seabiscuit--the whole experience is quite "high class" horse racing (complete with women in fancy hats)--Saratoga is a wonderful artsy place with excellent restaurants and some nice shops--the Philadelphia symphony is in residence at the Saratoga Performing Arts center (bring a fancy picnic and sit on the lawn); other days you can have outings in the mountains nearby--drive to Vermont for a day and stay at the Equinox Hotel. (bring golf clubs and money--Orivis outlet is in Manchester).
Our family will spend late June-early July moving to Memphis; then we'll take daughter to college (ironically, back to upstate NY; son is staying in Boston)--so no family trip this year to SOWAL. However, I can't have a summer with no beach, so Mr. New Yorker and I will try to grab a 4-5 day period and drive down. It'll be weird tho--our kids have grown up at this beach, and I'm having a hard time thinking of them not being with us.

so it's not really a hardship!) What we're doing instead is having a family winter beach vacation. The day after Christmas, we're all heading down to the beach to ring in the new year. We picked a house with a heated pool so the kids will still see plenty of swimsuit action. ;-)
