Sounds like good advice. It may have been Valtex my husband took & he got relief from it. You should probably be getting some relief. I hope you find something soon.

I edited my post because it's actually called Antagonistic Reaction, which makes more sense. It's more common then people realize but the docs don't know if they're not told.

I had them when I was a senior in high school. That was 25 years ago so I can't remember everything, but I do know they hurt like crazy. I had them from my belly button to my spine on one side. Supposedly they won't cross your middle, just follow the nerves on one side. They say they're not catchy, but I got them from a friend, and just this year I watched a group of friends here in Destin pass them around to each other. My brother had them on his face. That's got to be nasty.
I wasn't given any remedy, just told not to scratch or they'd leave scars. They left scars anyway. It started with the feeling like bee stings or needles, and later became open oozing sores. Good Luck!

So sorry, NoHall. I've had a mild case--if there is such a thing. I sure did hurt. Keep up with the lortab and the Valtrex should kick in soon. Hopefully you caught it early and the medication will keep the nerve pain from continuing after the breakout is gone. I've heard the capcaicin creams works really well. You're correct on the stress part. It can make them flare up.

Good luck!! Keep us posted.

So sorry NoHall. Yes, shingles is a painful malady--"nerve pain". Some get relief from a lidocaine patch or topical lidocaine but you will need a script. The valtrex should shorten the duration of your break out. Do not think you are a baby please know most people really suffer with shingles. It is serious business.

I have a friend who has a chronic/super zoster virus form of Ramsay Hunt (shingles on the face , eye and ear). Most people do not get a recurrent break out. Old drugs like elavil may help with the nerve pain and sleep.

Blessings and healing to you.

NoHall, so sorry you have shingles. I also thought I had bug bites when it was really shingles. Rather than being painful, I remember them to be itchy and irritating as hail. I used a lotion (can't remember the name) and it did stop them from spreading. They then became oozy and eventually crusted over (lovely). The 3 to 5 week prediction seems accurate but in my case they were irritating off and on for about a year. My daughter had them last year. :sosad:

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

1/2 lortab to one glass of wine...Pain is diminished but I still have my wits about me, sort of.

About capsasin...beware! I put some of that on me and on my daughter for backpain. We both experienced severe burning and redness that could not be stopped by bathing, ice, anything. This was several hours after we had applied it and then went outside in the sun with tshirts on. I was bike riding and she was at band practice and both of us were stopped in our tracks by the pain.
Sounds like you have enough grief at the moment.

I'm trying to figure out what to expect, how to plan the next 3-5 weeks, etc.

I went to school a half day today and was almost passing out from the pain and general ill feeling by lunch. Tomorrow I HAVE to be there--not because anyone is making me, but because no one can replace me! (I'm not being arrogant...we just don't have anyone to lead the band, and it's homecoming...)

My doctor gave me Lortab for the pain, but it doesn't really help (if I take enough of them, it knocks me out and I don't care anymore.) He told me to spray it with something like Lanacaine, but that doesn't help, either. The Valtrex was supposed to stop it from spreading, but it's spreading.

The good news is that I don't look as bad as the pictures I found when I googled "shingles." (I liked the terra cotta ones, and the slate ones, and the cedar shakes...I've had too much Lortab...)

Has anyone had this %$#@! mess? I wanna know if I'm gonna feel this bad for 3 to 5 weeks, or if I'll just have the rash...Doc says this came on because of stress...go figure...

Ya know I think they have a vaccine for that stuff now.

Anyway, Lyrica was supposedly specifically made to combat the pain from Shingles. Google it and ask your Doctor. I have had several tell me it was a really good product.

so sorry / reply

Shingels are a muted form of the chicken pox they run along the nerves in the body . There are some aloe creams for sunburn that also have lidocaine in them Aveno mixed into a thick paste will help or just put it bath water yes they are contagious . Dr Roberts at Village Health is awsome . My son had them
a couple of times . Best of luck so sorry
