Fishin's Fantastic! Fishing With Captain Larry

April 23, 2010 by Larry Pentel

Somebody needs to get up with the Chamber of Commerce and see if we can get a patent on the last 10 days. If not I sure hope we at least get summer re-runs ! The cobia run continues on with lots of fish around, the spanish are here in good numbers, there are a few groupers to be had, plenty of pinks and vermillions and, of course, the ever present Red Snappers are piled up just waiting to be caught and released.

I have only had one cobia trip so far this season where we didn't get one (with my next door neighbor no less). We did however catch a nice King on a spanish rig and lost another when the spoon broke (darn it!)along with a dozen spanish on a picture perfect day. Good to see a few a kings showing up. I have heard of a couple Mahi and a Sail showing up on the Bar also in the past 2 days. When the weather that has me on the hill today is past I imagine that the next trip out will have all the target species available in good numbers. The hard part is trying to decide which one to chase !

While the cobia may have the most publicity I still run some "just" bottom fishing trips. This group was part of a wedding party and I got to take the Groom and his dad. They had a great time catching Snappers and Groupers but the Groom had the (2nd) biggest catch of his life with the critter at the far right of the picture--

Warming up for a wedding!

A little closer look-

I don't think I can remember anybody more excited to catch a nice shark, I filleted it for 'em and they planned to have it served at the rehearsal dinner that weekend!

Yesterday was sunny but sloppy with a SE breeze ahead of this weather system- perfect cobia conditions ! I had an all day trip with a couple regulars and thier buddies and we bottom fished in the AM and then gave the cobia what for in the middle of the day. A great catch !

A Limit of Cobia !- We let 4 more go !

Here's a few more happy anglers with some Brown Backed Crab Crunchers

This fellow said he had been trying to catch a Cobia for 4 years !

Spanish for the younger anglers and Cobia for the Dads !

It's a shame his running Buddy had to get off the boat just when the fish started to show.- This guy got to tussle with 2 of 'em-

A fish fry in the making !

I've got lots of reels that need line, broken guides to fix and all the other repairs that 15 straight days of fishin' entail. It's been a great spring ! Since it started a little late we probably have another 2 weeks of good Cobia season left to look forward too! And plenty of stragglers till June !
