Late Summer Cobia In The Boat
August 5, 2010 by Larry Pentel
With Red Snappers off limits, we have been trolling for Kings quite a bit and have had a pleasant surprise the past few days.
The cobias have decided to do a summer rerun! Now, we are not seeing fish migrating down the sandbar but are finding them holding up close in wrecks and rocks.
I have not seen any huge fish but we did boat one at 46 pounds this week. He was with 6 other fish. The next one down was about 30 pounds which we fought for a while also but the hook pulled. All the rest were shorts but we caught several and released 'em.
I have seen a lot more short fish than legal but just about all the wads of fish have at least one limit size or better fish in it. We had three legal ones swim up one day and we hooked all three while I tried to give my anglers a crash course in cobia fighting technique. We boated one of the trio and had lots of excitement for 30 minutes!
Kings and Cobia
Some fine Kings around
Easy to keep kids happy when they are catchin' fish!
The Feds and the State are have a meeting August 16th through 19th to "discuss" reopening Red Snappers. We all know that the quota wasn't even half filled when they shut it down. I guess they have to talk about it for a month or two before they let us catch a few more of the most abundant fish out there !
BP called me again and offered another job-- just show up the next day. Once again I turned down the big (easy) money rather than cancel my charters. I may not be smart (or wealthy) but you know I am going to keep fishing as long as God and the Government let me !!
The water isn't crowded, the seas are calm and the temps are downright warm-- get out there and catch something!
