Hurricane Oyster Bar and Grill Is A Grayton Tradition
February 11, 2016 by Audrey Johnson
Hurricane Oyster Bar and Grill is a true local hangout in SoWal, and a convenient spot to relax for a bite and a drink. Signed dollar bills cover the walls, turtles swim by, and reggae sets a beachy vibe, but what really sets Hurricane’s apart is the oysters - any way you like them.
Hurricane started out as an oyster bar in Seaside and has become a tradition in Grayton Beach. If you’ve spent any time on the Gulf Coast, then oysters have called your name. And even if you can’t stomach the slippery critters, you have to respect the cultivation process - and the culture that developed around it.
If you once loved an oyster that didn’t love you back, don’t worry. You are not alone, and there are many other things on the menu. Hurricane’s menu is brilliant in its simplicity, inspired by cuisine from places a hurricane could hit. That’s why you’ll find Apalachicola oysters, traditional Southern dishes, and Mexican and Caribbean influences - all under one roof.
When the SoWal crew takes the boardwalk past the galleries and shops of Grayton North to Hurricane’s, we tend to stay within the realm of our favorite things. We love a good beach burger, and Hurricane’s serves theirs with seasoned steak fries.
The blackened fish tacos topped with cabbage, cilantro and pico make for a light, happy inducing meal that transports you to the Caribbean. Daily blackboard specials, like catfish and collards, mix things up for the regulars. And you can never go wrong with a basket of fried shrimp and the catch of the day.
Happy Hour at Hurricane starts at 3pm…because it must. And with $1 drafts and $5 buffalo chicken sliders, it’s a no-brainer. They even knock something off Imports. ($3 Heineken anyone?) Winos get $2 off a glass and 30% off bottles. If Hurricanes and Margaritas are more your speed, sip them for $5 from 3-6 every day. And, of course, everyone gets $2 off raw oysters during happy hour.
Hurricane Oyster Bar and Grill is just north of Scenic 30A on Hwy 283 (Grayton Road) and sits in the shops of Mystic Porte overlooking a pond full of lilies and turtles. A boardwalk connects the restaurant to the shops and artist galleries that make Grayton Beach unique. Grab a table on the deck and watch the game on one of 14 screens.
Hurricane is open daily for lunch and dinner. Enjoy Happy Hour specials daily from 3-6. For menus and info, please visit hurricaneoyster.com. Check out Hurricane's on Facebook and tag your food photos on Instagram using #hobag.
