Red Snapper for Breakfast - Lunch & Dinner Too

June 4, 2014 by Larry Pentel

The long awaited opening of Red Snapper season has not disapointed any of my eager anglers that have gotten to go chase the critters. We have had some really pretty boards of good size Snappers along with lots of bonus fish.

On several of the trips the past week the bonus fish by thenselves would have made for a fine catch. The weather the past few days has not been near as predictible as the fishing, going from rough to rain to pretty darn nice at a rapid pace. We have come in early on a couple trips to make sure that we kept it to a great "fun" trip and I have cancelled a couple trips where there was no way it would have been fun once we got out.

Today is a nice bright sunny day and surf is only a couple feet on the beach but the NE wind is blowing 20 to 25 and a mile offshore I can see BIG whitecaps. Always better to be on the beach wishin' you were fishin' than offshore wishin' you were on the beach!

Here are some pics from calmer days the past week.

Yesterdays group with a fine catch. While those big Red Snappers
were a bit much for our junior angler he helped with every one of those
Kings!

A great limit of Red Snapper and King on a half day trip.

We came in an hour early on a scheduled 4 hr... With a limit of
big Snapper, a few King and a pair of FINE Tuna ! These folks were kind
enough to share and Mary and I had sashimi 2 nights in a row for dinner!

What a great board...and we had to come in an hour early this AM as well. Big Snappers, Kings and Mahis.

A few even bigger Snappers along with 3 Kings.

These guys caught a limit of Red Snapper in about 2 hours and I
suggested we go King fishin'..they said "Nope, we want a limit of
Vermillions too" They got 'em as well as a King on the fly pole in the
next 2 hours...

Opening afternoons 3 hr...what a great mix of fish!

Opening mornings catch with a great Red Grouper for a bonus fish.

Lots of fishin' choices for June but Red Snappers will stay most folks number one priority for the box. The King bite should stay steady for a while as well. Triggers and Amberjacks closed in State waters on June 1st for 2 months but with all the other options available I doubt anyone will even notice ...... Gag (black) Groupers open up July 1st and that will make a big difference to a lot of experienced ( or lucky) anglers...we had to release 4 FINE ones yesterday while we were Snapper fishing.....

See you on the beach at Grayton!
