Walton County 200 Countdown Celebration honors the founding of Walton County, Dec. 29, 1824. Brenda Rees started countdown in 2004 to highlight historic day and begin countdown to 200th Birthday. Event held at home of Brenda Rees on Eastern Lake in South Walton.

Brenda Rees, event founder, said, “We have a great time toasting one of Florida’s most historic and beautiful counties. Guests sign in, gather for the sunset toast and recite “Octavia” a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe for Octavia Walton Le Vert. Those still around in 2024 will celebrate Walton’s bicentennial and share wine set aside each year.”

The event was started in 2004 to highlight Walton County’s significant history which complements its unique and beautiful environment. The wrong date for Walton’s founding is published in several books, so this event helps set that date straight. In addition, Walton is one of the older counties in the area. While Walton County will be 200 years old in 2024, it will be 2025 when Washington County is 200 years old, 2113 for Bay County to be 200 years old, and 2115 for Okaloosa County to be 200 years old.
