FOOW - Fish Out Of Water
Four diamond service. Panoramic Gulf views. Casual vibes. Tranquil blues. Fish Out Of Water (FOOW) plays it cool with casual fine dining in South Walton.
FOOW is the acronym for and new iteration of the restaurant formerly known as Fish Out of Water. FOOW embodies the spirit of the WaterColor community: coastal, fun, and unpretentious, with impeccable service and cuisine in an approachable, coastal setting overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
The open-air design features floor to ceiling windows and an outdoor balcony made for people watching and sunset cocktails. The menu, drinks, and interior design, coupled with a streamlined open-air kitchen, create a lively and engaging ambience- perfect for lunch with the kiddos, happy hour with friends, or a romantic date night.
The open kitchen allows you to watch the Chefs in action while they create locally-sourced Southern cuisine with global influences. Mouth-watering Duck Fat Fries are cooked with Confit Garlic, Duck Cracklings, Caramelized Vidalia Onions, Parmesan and Harissa Spiced Ketchup for a kick.
If you want to kick it like Bruce Lee (and learn how to pronounce FOOW in the process) try the Kung FOOW Shrimp, golden fried and served with spiced cocktail aioli and a lemon wedge. Healthy salads and bowls, fried buckets of seafood, a trio of tacos, and sandwiches round out the lunch menu.
For dinner, start with Mustard Braised Pork Belly with Mediterranean Hot Sauce, Greens, Fig Jam and Pork Cracklings. This dish melts in your mouth and marries all things South. The dinner menu also introduces roasted, stuffed Gulf oysters three ways.
Entrees like Jamaican Spiced Jerk Pork grilled and served with pineapple salsa and Caribbean sweet and sour sauce give the menu some island flavor. Sides like the Southern inspired Field Peas are seasoned with Andouille Sausage and garnished with chives for a little bit of love in each bite.
Insta worthy dessert fish bowls are a big hit and come in portions big enough to share with the whole table. The Tropical Lagoon with Pineapple-Mango Curd, Fruit Compote, Citrus Pound Cake and Key Lime Pop is a novelty.
Happy hour at FOOW happens daily from 3-7 pm. FOOWBar Bites feature small plates like Duck Fat Fries and Low Country Crab Dip - Carolina Pimento Cheese, Roasted Sweet Corn, Blue Crab Chow Chow served with Salted Cracker Bread. Feed your adventurous side with Fried Florida Alligator served alongside Tomato-Jalapeño Jam and Micro Herbs.
Signature cocktails like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof marry Cat Head Honeysuckle Vodka with Lemon, Jalapeño and Mint, perfect for sipping out on the balcony. Rumor has it that once you get that click in your head, people begin to look like a young Paul Newman or Elizabeth Taylor.
The full bar also features craft beer on draft and wines by the glass. Jack Sparrow himself would be delighted with the FOOW Rum menu that features an extensive list of the best of rums from around the world.
There’s a golden hour for family time at FOOW, and it’s from 5-6 pm. Happy Hour is in full swing, FOOW begins serving the dinner menu at 5, and kids eat free from 5-6 pm. Families, sandy toes and the public are all welcome. (Just make sure you throw on a cover up and some flip flops if you’re coming in from the beach.)
For large groups and special celebrations, the FOOWroom is a private getaway from the crowds, surrounded by an impressive wine cellar where wines are available by the bottle. (SoWal Insider tip: FOOW operates on beach time and does not accept reservations. Great news…there’s a loophole! Groups can book the FOOWroom for private parties, events, weddings and more.)
The FOOWshoppe, a retail space located on the first floor of the restaurant, has apparel for kids and adults including adorable (and soft!) T-shirts and hats. Fun bar supplies, and hard-to-find FOOW spices and sauces, like locally sourced pecan oil and herb infused pink salt, are also available for purchase.
FOOW is located at the AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Four-Star rated WaterColor Inn. The restaurant is open to the public and features panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico. Open daily for lunch, happy hour and dinner, FOOW is WaterColor casual at its finest. Visit www.FOOW30a.com to see menus and more.
