Not to dwell on this subject but I'm driving down 30A (west end) and I notice yellow plastic wrappers by everyones mailbox this morning.
Could this be the sign of another phone book bandit littering the streets?

Most of these homes in Dune Allen are rentals I'm curious to see how long the yellow plastic wrappers hang around....................

Unbelievably, I just received another phonebook. It has only been a week or two since the last one came. :bang:
This is one I never heard of ("Yellow Book") and I pitched it.
I suppose this is a business for someone, or several someones, soliciting advertising and printing all these books. I find it ironic that a phonebook is less and less necessary as the internet gets better and better. I personally rarely use a phonebook anymore, I use the internet.
Do all the businesses that buy advertising in these funky books realize a good bunch of them end up straight in the trash? :dunno:
The rental properties cannot possibly keep them all in the units, can they?
A waste of resources, IMHO. All those trees, all that gas delivering them, all that trash to recycle or bury.

Ditto that! I got one too yesterday I think. Plain burgandy van just cruises down the street and a passenger casually drops them at every mailbox!!! :bang:
Advertisers: Quit buying this crap.....please.

Where do we recycle them? I have a couple of dozen, and seem to be adding daily!

SRB has dumpsters for recycling about 1/2 block South of 98 on 393.
I got another at home and apparently someone feels I must need two at the showroom. So frustrating! :bang::bang:
Where is Aleonard? Did she have any luck with her article on what a waste all these books are in a time when the world is trying to be a little greener?

I have to agree about too many phonebooks, but Embarq is the official phonebook in our area. The "Real Yellow Pages", Talking Phonebook, and a couple of others have invaded our area like locusts and are here only to take advantage of an advertising- heavy market. I have been called and visited numerous times by them all. Your call for advertisers to quit advertising is ludicrous. I have made big profits from advertising in the Embarq yellow pages and have found in my personal marketing study (frequency, volume, and sales) to be the best for my money. I also use their search engine marketing product. Yellow page marketing isn't for everyone, but hands down Embarq provides the best results and customer service. If it doesn't work for your business, why have it? If it does, why would I get rid of it? Most people who criticize certain types of marketing have never made a living from them or speaks from ignorance. Just because YOU or your friends do something a certain way doesn't mean everyone does.

See, Desso, I have no problem with the Embarq book. I keep it and I use it, when I use a phonebook at all. My gripe is with the unofficial books which have multiplied to a ridiculous amount. I seriously doubt that advertising in all of them would be a cost effective marketing tool, especially when, if you ask around, I think people's habits will validate your experience. The Embarq book produces customers and doesn't land instantly in the trash. Do all those junk imitators produce customers for you???

I would say no. Advertising in more than the locally affiliated book (Embarq) is very scattershot. Unless you are willing to ask every caller, which book in particular did you get the number or see my ad, it is overkill. Of course, these other companies offer lower pricing, buy one- get ten free promotions, easy payment terms, and a lot of hot air numbers about distribution, ROI, and how successful their product is.

Good Evening Everyone!
I truly appreciate all of the comments I have seen here. I am a marketing consultant for Dex the publisher of the Embarq Yellow Pages and a member of the South Walton community. I would like to address some of the very real concerns expressed on this thread.
-As the publisher of the Embarq Yellow Pages we are required to print a directory every year. The independent books are not required to print and can come and go with the wind. As I can see most of you would like to see them blow away (I am sure you must know how I feel) but such is free enterprise!
-The Embarq Yellow Pages is produced with recycled materials.
-It is true the internet is fast becoming a strong medium for local businesses. (Dex is 1 of 6 authorized representatives for Google), however imagine a scenario where your power is out and you need to find an electrician who makes 24 hour emergency calls and services the south walton area, you will only find that information in the Embarq Yellow Pages (being that your computer will be off).
-To the link concerning the storage full of books, we audit the company we contract to distribute our books to keep this from happening.
-Our clients do not write checks every month to us because they are philanthropic. They do so because quite simply, it works! It is still the most effective advertising for businesses to reach ready to buy consumers.
One important marketing note: Advertising should NEVER cost you money, it should make you money.
I have been with other advertising mediums and have true appreciation for all forms of marketing. Businesses need customers to thrive and it has been my pleasure to help many businesses reach their goals through the form of advertising that fits their specific business.
Not all advertising is created equal, some are more effective than others.
Thank you all for your comments and for allowing me this opportunity to discuss the other side!
Have a wonderful evening!
