Being of an age when the Equal Rights Amendment was an issue, this pick reminds me of the "token woman" syndrome so prevalent in the 60's and 70's. Why didn't McCain pick a woman with a credible resume, with national political experience, who could actually be compared to competent women like Hillary or to competent men like Joe Biden? In my opinion, in his mind -- a token conservative woman was all he needed. That does all women a disservice.

Karen Thurmond, Florida Demo Chair, just released a statement saying, "She's no Hillary Clinton. She's Dan Quayle in a dress." Read all of it at www.waltondemocrats.org

I hear that some of the women Republican hens (Sen. Kay Hutcheson, Sen. Elizabeth Dole) are now cackling over this "up and comer" Palin, and wondering why they were by passed over? Probably cause they were not considered a "babe" like Palin....now c'mon girls!!

Has anyone considered this might be some Rovian tactic where Palin will resign mid to late September? Turn this into a media circus for a short time to detract from the DNC Convention and Obama exposure? I'm not negating Palin's accomplishments, I, like Goofer, feel McCain could have made a better choice in selecting a more seasoned candidate. :dunno:

I just read that she is a Pat Buchanan fan. I am working on confirming the source, but, eeeeuuuuuwwwww!
:rotfl:

From what I gather, Hillary voters. PUMA = Party Unity My A**. :rotfl: Those cougars have a sense of humor.

I knew that cougars must have been tied into that definition somehow. I was thinking that maybe Palin was a cougar, and that PUMA were the young guys who were attracted to cougars. :funn:

You know I am watching Sarah on TV closely. If she ditches the glasses and lets her hair flow down around her shoulders I think she is interesting. ;-)
Was she really a beauty contest winner ??

God forbid McCain and the Republicans win, but I for one would have rested a lot easier with Mitt Romney as the VP, especially with the economy tanking.

I think Palin was a knee jerk choice frankly.

I kinda feel the same way about your presidential choice, token, kneejerk, inexperienced.

I think many are questioning his choice of her for that reason, plus McCain's age and previous health issues. I thought that Obama's choice of Biden was contradictory too, since Biden has been in office since he was 29 years old. That isn't change. Now, McCain has done just the same thing. He found a mostly inexperienced person to take VP. Obama's campaign has been talking about Obama not being a Wa(r)shington type. Bill Clinton reiterated Obama's inexperience, relating it to his own lack of experience when he was running. Al Gore talked about Abe Lincoln's lack of experience. So, it will be hard for the Dems to talk about Palin's, second in command, lack of experience in Wa(r)shington. The flip-side is now Reps will have to shut up about Obama's lack of experience.

These four candidates may not be the best people for our Country, as Goofer said. However, they will draw the most ratings to every news channel in the US. Who would have ever guessed that so many people would be watching politics rather than fancy shows like American Idol? I think that just by these four running, it will make Americans take more of an interest in the workings of politics.

For a moment after the announcement of Palin as VP, I thought that may lock up the race for McCain to win. Up until today, I have thought that Obama would have the better chance of winning. Now, I have no idea. I think this could now become one of the closest races ever.

My hat's off to anyone who gives birth to a child. My nephews' moms were back at work within a week, so I know it isn't crazy, but if I had a child (and we aren't even talking about actually giving birth) born, I wouldn't want to go back to work for a while. I applaud all women who give birth, especially my mother. She said I came out kicking, and at almost ten pounds, I cannot imagine how that must feel.

What I think that Palin's quick recovery and back to work action did, is prove that a woman can take care of business. It may sound crazy, but there are still a few men out there who think that women are too emotional for the job, and that their bodies won't allow them to think straight (I think they use childbirth, periods, and menopause as some of the reasons).

I wondered what it meant also, I googled it but all I got was tennis shoes :rotfl:

Oh yes, she was one of the Pitchfork gang (google it)...she also vetoed a bill to take the Polar bears off the endangered list..she is tied in with big oil -- she is anti choice; says she would Outlaw abortion even in the case of rape or incest; said she had not really focused on the Iraq war--in spite of the fact that one of her sons is being deployed:--as the Mom of a son who deployed many times--I find this last fact unbelieveable!

:wave:GW58, I have been taking the majority of my day trying to learn about this lady. Unfortunately what I have found is blog entries and message board comments which don't give me facts.

  • I know that she is pro-life but have not read that she would be against an abortion in the case of rape or incest, would you please provide a link??
  • I googled the Pitchfork gang and found nothing. Will you send me a link??
  • I read that the polar bears are threatened not endangered. Which is it?? Again, finding facts is hard. I dont rely on Wiki either.
  • This is all I could find on Palin's view of the war. It seems she just doesn't comment much on it? In an interview with Alaska Business Monthly shortly after she took office in 2007, Palin was asked about the upcoming surge. She said she hadn't thought about it. "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq," she said. "I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe."
Seven months into the surge, she still either had not formed any opinion on the surge or the war or just wasn't sharing. "I'm not here to judge the idea of withdrawing, or the timeline," she said in a teleconference interview with reporters during a July 2007 visit with Alaska National Guard troops stationed in Kuwait. "I'm not going to judge even the surge. I'm here to find out what Alaskans need of me as their governor."

But then again this is from a blog....

Thanks for any help you can give!!
