Pickles, Pizza, and Thai - Oh My!

May 21, 2013 by Jill Tanner

Pickle Factory in Grayton Beach is a SoWal hidden gem. Locals love the fun and funky style, which is a perfect complement to the eclectic menu. Just north of Scenic 30A off Hwy 283, take the first left on Clayton Lane and you'll see Pickle Factory tucked in with several other eateries and businesses, right beside Grayton Beach Fitness.

The staff is so friendly and owner Jeff Fehr is one cool cat. Pickle Factory serves up some of the best food in town, in an atmosphere that will make you smile. Jeff spent 12 years in Thailand before moving to South Walton to take a break and be with family.

In Thailand, Jeff was a busy guy. He lived his life and worked in printing and publishing, but quickly found a huge problem – he couldn’t find a good pickle for his Bloody Mary! So, in 1996 Jeff started making pickles. In no time at all he was selling upwards of 10 cases of his brand of pickles, Mr. Pickle, to Hard Rock Thailand, Planet Hollywood, grocery stores, and other retailers.

That same year, Jeff traveled to Italy to study the art of pizza making and returned to Thailand to open the original Pickle Factory in 1997. It was a bakery, restaurant, and nightclub, complete with a pool and outside seating. Pickle Factory in Thailand became a huge success and was named the best pizza in Bangkok.

In 2007, Jeff moved to South Walton and in 2009 he opened Pickle Factory in Grayton Beach. Pickle Factory is now a local favorite, serving pizza, Thai food, salads, crab cakes, entrees, sandwiches and more. One of the most popular pizzas is the Kee Mao Thai Pizza with a spicy blend of beef, onions, garlic, chilies, Thai basil, and secret seasonings. The dough and sauce are always made fresh and it’s evident in the taste. The menu is loaded with choices, but you can also create your own combination.

Okay, let’s talk Thai. Lunch is served Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 – 2:30. You can indulge in some of the best Thai food you've ever tasted right in Grayton Beach. Try the Crispy Pork Spring Rolls with sweet chili sauce, or ask KJ, Jeff’s lunch helper, to make you some of her shrimp or chicken fried rice – it’s incredible. “Thai it, you’ll love it.”

Here are a few examples of Thai lunch specials: Shrimp and Pineapple Coconut Curry with Jasmine Rice
Chiang Mai Noodles with Chicken and Yellow Curry
Roasted Red Pork with Egg Noodles
Penang Curry with Beef and Zucchini on Jasmine Rice
Tom Yum Goong – Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup with Jasmine Rice

The fried pickles deserve their own round of applause. These fresh, homemade pickles are lightly battered and fried up with onions, garlic, and red chilies, and served with a side of homemade ranch for dipping. You haven’t had fried pickles until you’ve tried these. The flavors burst in your mouth and the freshness makes these pickles a step above the rest.

Pickle Factory is also an official Green Bay Packers bar, serving up brats, beer, and pizza any given Sunday during football season. The place is packed with Packers fans and anyone who wants to see the big game. But anytime is a good time for pizza, pickles, and Thai food! So stop on by and enjoy the fresh food and atmosphere in this hidden gem.
