Chanticleer Eatery Soars Ahead
October 26, 2015 by Sarah Robertson
Sandro and Emily Wever are the husband and wife dream team behind Chanticleer Eatery. Since opening in June of 2012, they have shared their collective food vision with SoWal, and the result is a legion of loyal customers.
The couple met while working in a restaurant, so creating food together has always come naturally to them. And much like the ideal relationship, Chanticleer’s food is homey, satisfying, full of flavor, and sometimes spicy.
Emily credits her Southern roots and Sandro’s Caribbean upbringing for their food’s magic. “I use lots of butter and he uses spice,” she says.
The quality and consistency of Chanticleer’s fare is rock solid. Keeping with the baking tradition that started it all, virtually everything is made in house from scratch daily, down to the bread for sandwiches and buns for burgers. And they don’t skimp on dessert, either. The craveable Key Lime Pie, Carrot Cake, and Double Chocolate Cake all come in portion sizes that are big enough to share.
Along with delicious staples like signature salads and sandwiches, Chanticleer now serves Jambalaya, Shrimp & Grits, Pulled Pork, and Chicken & Rice to the lunch crowd. Appetizers like the Un-Brie-Lieveable Eggrolls, filled with creamy brie, apples, smoky bacon and red onion, and the thinly sliced Ahi tuna over a bed of slaw are right for lunch munching, too.
For dinner, Chanticleer’s all-natural 12-ounce Black Angus Ribeye is a 1-¼ inch hand selected cut that’s cooked to taste. And the only thing that could rival good steak is two thick-cut 8 ounce boneless pork chops, marinated to perfection and grilled until fork tender.
Chanticleer is clearly focused on the eats, but there’s big news on the beverage front. They finally have a full liquor license! The back portion of the restaurant has been recently renovated to emanate a cool bar vibe. And the drink list is really something special. It is inspired and varied, as is the wine and beer selection.
Happy Hour is weekdays from 5 to 6 pm and offers $2 off wines by the glass and specialty drinks, as well as draft, domestic and premium bottled beer specials.
Just like the attention paid to the rest of their menu, Chanticleer makes drink mixers from scratch and uses real juice in their cocktails. The out-of-this-world Bloody Mary mix is made from house smoked and roasted veggies. Adults with a sweet tooth should definitely order the frozen White Chocolate Coconut Cookie cocktail made with vanilla vodka and coconut rum that tastes just like their cookie of the same name.
Methodically and with care, Sandro and Emily have grown their business to include dinner, bar service and a delicious array of treats for any palate. Chanticleer is a family-friendly restaurant with a great kids menu, as well as gluten free and vegetarian options. The team comes together every day to provide great service, and it shows in their hard work and commitment to putting out some of the best food in SoWal.
