Locals Love South of Philly

Jeremy Price was having such a hard time finding a decent Philly Cheesesteak at the beach that he decided he must open his own restaurant. Now, two years later, SoWal locals are still flocking to South of Philly (SOP) for their Cheesesteak fix, and a whole lot more. This little eatery, located just north of Gulf Place along Hwy 393 South, is a real SoWal gem.

“I grew up just outside of Philadelphia and eating Philly Cheesesteaks was just a way of life,” explains Jeremy. “When my family moved to South Walton, we decided to continue that tradition with our own restaurant featuring the traditional Cheesesteak.”

South of Philly is a bit off the beaten path but very close to the beach at Ed Walline Park and Gulf Place. The restaurant has been embraced by locals who know where to go for great food in a relaxed place at a good price. The cheesesteak here is the real deal. Served with some of the best fries you'll find anywhere.
 

“We really cater to the working people down here,” explains Jeremy. “Our place is filled with contractors, painters, utility workers, maintenance folks, lawn care workers…they come for the affordable lunch.”

South of Philly features a daily $10 lunch special which includes a sandwich, fries, and drink. By far, the most ordered menu item is the Cheesesteak, followed by the hand patted cheeseburger, and then the Gyro. Continuing his Philadelphia allegiance, Jeremy offers a $5 Cheesesteak following every Philadelphia Eagle win during the regular NFL season. What’s not to cheer about that?

The restaurant interior is comfortable and casual with Philadelphia Eagle and Philadelphia Flyer memorabilia adorning the walls. Jeremy’s love for his four boys is evident with their photos prominent throughout…Jeremy coaches two of his boys in their Dixie Youth baseball leagues.

South of Philly menu options also include Quesadillas, Italian Hoagies, Hot pastrami Sandwiches, and Caribbean Shrimp Tacos. Buffalo Chicken, Smoked Turkey, and Chicken Caesar wraps are also featured, along with assorted salads and smoothies. Thirst crenchers include sodas, teas, water, and domestic beers. A variety of locally-brewed beers are also available.
 
If you are interested in getting your Philly Cheesesteak on, the restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. -8:00 p.m. If you’re from Philly, you’ll feel right at home. If not then you're in for the real deal.

We ate at SOP during our stay on 30A a couple of weeks ago. The pastrami was great. My husband had the gyro which he gave a thumbs up. The fries might have been the best fries I have ever had in my life. Can't wait to be back on 30A and we will for sure eat at South of Philly again. Jackie K (SoWal reader review).
