Crackings in Grayton Beach is Special

February 23, 2015 by Jill Tanner

Traditional breakfast foods like bacon and eggs are a big part of most Southerners’ lives. I’m a southern girl myself, born and raised in a small country town in Georgia, and I love my biscuits, bacon, and cheese grits.

I thought I had experienced every possible method or manner to consume breakfast foods, be it omelets, skillets, or sandwiches, but I was very wrong. When I arrived at Crackings in Grayton Beach for a SoWal photo shoot, I was astonished at the variety of new dishes on the menu. Sure, you can get bacon and eggs, but once you see the menu, I bet you can’t bring yourself to order anything traditional.

We started with the “City Grits” - think loaded potato fixings on Gouda grits, but with added flavors of roasted garlic and onions. This dish gave a welcome modern twist to conventional cheese grits. Get an order to share with the table.

When the Waffle Sliders were served, I actually laughed out loud, because I thought there is no way someone has put all of my favorite things together in one sandwich. Well, they had! It’s a basically a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, but on a waffle. Enough said, right? I didn’t get even two bites, because everyone at the table was fighting over them. As if that wasn’t enough, the famous Sweet Potato Pancakes were delivered and disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Crackings has a section on the menu called The Healthy Side where you can find wholesome, nutritious foods that won’t bore you. My favorite was the Chobani Tuile. This dish has a sweet, crisp wafer bowl, which they make from scratch, then filled with Chobani Vanilla Greek yogurt, topped it with berries and served with fresh cut fruit and local honey. Surprisingly, this was probably my favorite of the day. Any health conscious person can eat like a king and walk away feeling light and clean.

Next served was Fried Green Tomatoes served with a jumbo lump crab cake. This combo works on so many levels. The perfectly fried tomatoes are topped with a creole remoulade sauce and served alongside the crab cake over spinach and goat cheese. I went back the next day for this one!

We also tried the Fried Green Tomato BLT and the Turkey, Brie and Pesto Sandwich – both crowd pleasers.

We also sampled the Kale & Salmon Salad and the Grilled Terriyaki Chicken & Spinach Salad. Kale has been in the spotlight for years now, and for good reason. This green superfood is loaded with Vitamins A, K, and also calcium. So, with the Salmon, this salad may be the healthiest lunch option in town!

The SoWal Staff had an exceptional experience. Owner and General Manager Clayton Green explained each dish and the reasoning behind the new menu item. The thought and study behind their choices proved the dedication they have to serving the best product at a reasonable price. I just wish I had more than two thumbs to put up for this gem. So, when you are thinking of your next breakfast or lunch outing, think Crackings in Uptown Grayton. It will be an experience to remember.

Crackings is open Tuesday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., and guests can order from the whole menu anytime.
