7th Annual Hurricane Party Aug 27 in Grayton Beach

On August 27 at 6 p.m. Pandora’s in Grayton Beach will set the stage for a fun SoWal-sponsored party with live music provided by Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces. The event will feature live and silent auctions items with bidding on exotic trips to Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas and even a seven bedroom home in St. Barth for a week!

For the football fanatics, there will be a VIP package to the Alabama/LSU football game with seats in the ‘The ZONE’ and a pre-game, on-field tour by the University of Alabama athletic department.

Paddlers of all ages and skill levels gathered at Sandestin's Baytowne Marina for the fourth and final of the four-race series. The four-mile course was quite a challenge.

The race event consisted of a series of four endurance-building races: May 28 -- one mile course, June 24th -- two mile course, July 23rd -- three mile course, and August 13th -- four mile course. Race paddlers competed for the champion title "2011 YOLO Board Mileage Builder Series".

The fourth and final race in the Summer 2011 series included a celebrity appearance by Ingo Rademacher as the sun set on Western Lake at WaterColor BoatHouse on August 11. The fourth annual YOLO Board Stand-Up Paddle Series ran from May 2011 to August 2011 and  consisted of male and female teams competing relay style in two divisions, Beginning and Next  Level (men's), over the course of four races.

The community event showcases a wide spectrum of local faces with teams representing anything from the South Walton Fire District Lifeguards to real estate agents to area chefs.

McCullough Shrimping Is A Family Affair

It's nearing twilight and the McCullough clan of  Portland, Fla. prepares to send its crew off to man the night's run of the Capt. Wil-B, the family's shrimp boat.

This ritual takes place six days a week. Fuel has already been loaded into the boat's tanks from a fuel truck that visits the dock. Crushed ice to chill the catch is in chests ready to take to the boat, and the crew members have a supply of food to provide a meal through the long night ahead.

SoWal Local Says Welcome To Walmart!

Crowds gathered well before the doors of the Santa Rosa Beach Walmart opened June 15. The parking lot filled and cars were parked along West Hewitt Road. Vendors were there to hand out giveaways.

It was crazy, but exhilarating as the doors opened, says Harry Millsaps who works as a greeter there.

Harry is well known in South Walton as a Realtor, South Walton Fire District fire commissioner, Tourist Development Council Advisory board member and volunteer for many causes.

Video: SoWal Junior Lifeguards Hit the Beach

The South Walton Fire District's Junior Lifeguard Program is tearing it up this summer at the Ed Walline Beach Access in Santa Rosa Beach.

It's an excellent program in its fourth year under the direction of Beach Safety Director Gary Wise.
The students learn about the beach environment, including wave formation, how to identify a rip current and what to do if you are caught in one. The program provides training in water rescue techniques, first aid and CPR. Additional activities include kayaking, surfing and boogie boarding.
