Yes.

Indeed.
I am reminded of this Small Town Schtick that Gov. Palin has been pushing.
"We grow good people in small towns." To me this is shorthand for we grow white people in small towns. She is trying to appeal to a specific demographic.
Her message deflects from the truth, which is that our children will have a harder time buying a home than we did. That education is worse in this country than its been in a while. That sitting on the couch watching American Idol is now deemed preferable to such elitist practices as reading a book.
I've thought twice about Obama; I know he is a political animal.
I also believe that his heart is in the right place, and that his team will work hard. But we have to work hard, too.
Mango, I loved that speech by Richard Trumka.

I find this discussion of the "right" way to place one's body parts while listening to the national anthem very alarming. Does anyone besides me find this chilling? Isn't this where countries go when they are melting down? To finger pointing of this sort? It's only a small step from finger pointing to rounding up the "traitors" and disappearing them, as some people at recent McCain rallies have gotten around to suggesting.
i'll see your hand over the heart and raise you three flag pins and one cruise missile attack.

You should stand during the National Anthem and remove your hat but it is not necessary to cross your heart - - this is not disrespectful.

In all honesty, I haven't placed my hand over my heart since I was in grade school. There comes a time when respect does not need to be displayed in such a way.

I haven't placed my hand on my heart for the national anthem for years, but I face the flag and stand quietly at attention. The huge majority of the population understand that this is acceptable. Do some research up idlewind.

Great post!

Is the current economic crisis not enough of a wake-up call that this election needs to be about the issues?

Idlewild - the crazy homeless guy at the bus station has better political arguments than those!

..Right on!..I don't think your "crazy homeless guy" is going to look near as crazy after viewing some of these videos that are out.

Thanks for the Richard Trumka speech Mango!

Excerpt from speech:

I don't think we should be out there pointing fingers in peoples' faces and calling them racist. Instead we need to educate them that if they care about holding onto their jobs, their health care, their pensions, and their homes. If they care about creating good jobs with clean energy, child care, pay equity for women workers, there's only going to be one candidate on the ballot this fall who's on our side, only one candidate who's going to stand up for our families, only one candidate who's earned our votes...and his name is Barack Obama!

Do you think John McCain will do these things for America?

I don't.

Wow. I am a book reading, American Idol watching, small-town loving mom who works hard, volunteers in the community, coaches middle-school cross country and an active, working school board member. Sorry, but your comment about equating racism with small towns doesn't sit well with me, as well as your inference about reading and American Idol. I love American Idol, write about it because it is a fun thing for me but would much rather curl up with a good book and talk about it with friends!

The elementary and middle schools have implemented a minimum 25 Book goal, which needs to be met by the end of the school year. My son has already read 23 books but please, don't take away his American Idol! He has taken up the guitar because of it and is writing his own songs!

full time, as I said, bigotry knows no political boundries. I think people should see the one's you didn't post, if no other reason than to try to move past behavior like that.

I too was in seaside when the current president came through, and didn't witness the sign(s) yo have referenced a couple of times. I was right at the sushi bar, and when that area got to crazy, went up to the second floor, above pizitz. were the signs possibly at the 'approved' anti bush area? I to this day don't where that was, or why it was needed.

It's much easier to take notice of and offense to those things that actually offend you.

I love small towns, too. I live in a community of 10,000 people.
I don't want to take away your American Idol. I realize that a person can kill a few brain cells on the couch, and still have some left to read a book. I'd rather my kid learned guitar from Buckethead than American Idol, but I digress.
Palin's schtick *should* be offensive. It is a Morning in America fantasy--a safe, uncomplicated, nostalgic world where hockey moms drive carpool and dads mow the lawns on weekends and nobody ever worries about paying the bills.
Main Street USA is many things, but it is definitely not the divisive myth she is selling.

Her schtick sounds more like wishful rantasy thinking to me. It is a very interesting tactic she is using.

Can anyone tell me why it feels like Mr. Obama is kicking me to the curb of Main Street with his tax cut, cough cough wealth redistribution? :dunno: This is my last issue.
