Seaside Farmers Market Features Derryck's Pastries

February 27, 2012 by Chandra Hartman

I started vending at the Seaside market in December of last year when I decided I needed some different ways to spread my name and to sell my products while doing that. The reason I wanted to sell pastries is because of my knowledge in the area.

I have worked for many excellent 5-star hotels as the pastry chef all around the world. That includes the Sandestin Hilton at which I worked over 10 years. When they let me go, instead of finding another hotel to work at, I decided to go off on my own and let the locals taste my sweet sensations.

How long have you lived in the area and where are you from?
I have lived in Destin, Florida for over 11 years because who doesn't like the white sand and beautiful views. I am originally from Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India, from there I moved to Dubai and other middle east countries hoping to settle and live there until one day I got a call from Washington DC offering me a job as their pastry chef. I was so excited to know I was going to the land of the free and home of so much opportunity. 1 year later I was offered another job in Atlanta which then led me on more south until I finally reached Florida. The perfect destination.

How far do you travel for the market?
I travel about 9 miles to the market from Destin. This is about 20 minutes.

What products do you offer?
I offer homemade pastries, homemade breads and some Sri Lankan savories. The pastries include Tiramisu, Key Lime Pie, Bourbon Pecan Pie, and my very own award winning dessert called Cappuccino Chocolate Delight.

What makes your items special or unique?
What I think makes my items unique is my specialist touch. I have been working with pastries and bakery items for over 15 years and I feel I have a magical touch. I put a lot of pride in my work and enjoy people's comments about my product.

Is there anything new on the horizon? New products, seasonal items or specials?
Every Saturday you will have the opportunity to try something new whether it be a sweet or a bread or maybe even a sweet bread?...
