RUN/SUP Outdoor Fall Events & Activities in SoWal

September 24, 2019 by Manny Chavez

Cooler days  translate to “come get outside with us” for Tom Losee and his RUN/SUP team here in SoWal.

The RUN/SUP team can’t wait to get down to business with his Fall schedule of RUN/SUP (running and stand-up paddling) activities. One of Tom's favorite programs, a unique South Walton stair workout beginning and ending at the RUN/SUP store in Seagrove, is quickly becoming a favorite “workout with a view” for enthusiastic runners.

“We meet at 7 a.m. every Friday at our store here in Seagrove (next to Whiskey Bravo), walk across the street to the south side of Scenic 30A, and take the first walkover to the beach….we run up and down every stairway beach walkdown between the store and Bramble Grove,” explains Tom. “So, we are combining the stair-climbing and beach running in the sand which can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. Both runners and walkers are welcome, and everyone can choose to do as many stairs as they want to or are capable of. This unique workout takes about 30 minutes and the cooler it gets, the more fun it is!”

6:30 a.m. runs (minus the stairs) are conducted every Wednesday and this one-hour run also start and ends at the RUN/SUP store in Seagrove.

RUN/SUP has held their Summer Race Series (a run/stand-up paddle competition) for four years now and just completed their first Sandestin RUN/SUP Challenge held at the Baytowne Marina.

“The marina afforded us a beautiful location with the marina, Jolee Island, and the Choctawhatchee Bay all coming into play. For our inaugural event, we were able to include a silent auction for the one-mile run/one-mile paddle format. We had one open heat with a youth division, a male division , and a female division for prizes.” Proceeds from the event benefited the Sandestin Foundation for Kids."

Beginning Oct. 21, RUN/SUP’s popular kids Girls Sweat 30A classes will begin and will be led by RUN/SUP Fitness and Programming Director Dru Sandy. The classes are held every Monday (elementary school-age) and Wednesday (middle-school age) from 3:45 p.m.-4:45 p.m. at the WaterColor Boathouse.

The Boys Sweat 30A classes will be held on Tuesdays (elementary-school age) and Thursdays (middle-school age) from 3:45-4:45 p.m., also at the Boathouse. The Boys classes will be led by Aaaron Haugan, a fitness instructor who is also the cross-country coach at the Seaside School. Both the Boys and the Girls Sweat 30A classes involve a variety of fitness activities (agility training, SUP, running, yoga and games) and are open to registered participants and walk-ons. These classes offer a great opportunity for youthful development and appreciation for the great outdoors along with the benefits of exercise (why not make it fun)!

Weekly outdoor fitness experiences are offered by RUN/SUP and include TRX Classes (suspension movements with a mix of body weight exercises and training equipment, medicine balls, battle ropes, bands and more), Run/Sup, Fitness Bootcamps, and High-Intensity Interval Training (all-out interval training).

SUP boards and oars can be rented (by the hour or daily) or purchased out of the Boathouse. Private lessons are available for individuals or groups.

Gone are the days of running out the door with baggy sweats and ugly stinky tops! Today’s runner/stand-up paddler is typically very fashion-conscious, and the Seagrove RUN/SUP store has the goods for your physical excursions. Check out their vast assortment of running shoes which include the latest ON running shoes….they are currently the rage and rightly so. Light as a feather, you’ll be chasing your personal best wearing these and look good doing it!

Don’t head outdoors here in SoWal without a good pair of sunglasses! Do yourself a favor and don’t think you have to plunk down a ransom for expensive shades. The very cool Goodr sunglasses are polarized, lightweight, come in a variety of shapes and sizes and you can walk out with them for $25!

Since you’ll be wanting clothing built to move in, try the Vuori line of men’s and women’s shorts and pants and round out your ensemble with a pair of Oofos flip-flops…these shoes are designed to help your feet recover.

RUN/SUP will be participating at the 30A Half-Marathon Race Expo to be held Saturday, Oct. 12 at Gulf Place.
